Skin of the Natives Skin of the Natives is a 12 chapter excursion, by journalist Saul Flores, documenting the many indigenous groups of Mexico.

The political power in Mexico is shared between 31 states, one federal district, and eight drug trafficking organizations known as the “cartels.” The ongoing territorial battle that has resulted from new multi-billion dollar drug-trafficking routes has given Mexico a new cultural identity. Underneath a country where gang territories and state lines are beginning to blur, Mexico’s 62 indigenous gro

ups are attempting to preserve their fading customs. Skin of the Natives is a 12 chapter image diary documenting the many indigenous tribes of Mexico. A project aimed at preserving people, documenting resistance, and promoting folkloric liberty. Through image, I hope to bring to light the issues that individual groups face. From the civic resistance of the Zapatistas in Chiapas, to the many traditional dances of the Guelaguetza Festival in Oaxaca, this project will shed new light on Mexico.
