Happy World Poetry Day! Here is a wonderful translation to this poem:

Mirabeau Bridge
Translated by Richard Wilbur

Under the Mirabeau Bridge
there flows the Seine
And our loves recall how then
After each sorrow joy came back again

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

Hands joined and face to face let’s stay just so
While underneath
The bridge of our arms shall go
Weary of endless looks the river’s flow

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

All love goes by as water to the sea
All love goes by
How slow life seems to me
How violent the hope of love can be

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

The days the weeks pass by beyond our ken
Neither time past
Nor love comes back again
Under the Mirabeau Bridge there flows the Seine

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay.

📍 The Grand Staircase at the Château de La Rochefoucauld in France, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, 1519.

Built around 1519, during the Renaissance—a period renowned for its artistic and architectural innovations—the staircase is celebrated for its unique double helix design. This design allows two separate streams of people to ascend and descend without ever meeting, a concept that was revolutionary for its time and is often cited as a precursor to the modern double helix staircase.

The staircase is housed within a tower and serves as a central piece, demonstrating not only architectural ingenuity but also the elegance and grandeur typical of Renaissance design principles.

The Château de La Rochefoucauld itself is a significant historical and architectural landmark in France, with origins dating back to the 11th century, though much of its current form was developed during the Renaissance.

The inclusion of the Grand Staircase attributed to Leonardo da Vinci adds a layer of intrigue and prestige, blending art, architecture, and history.

Leonardo was known for his diverse talents and innovative designs, and while there is some debate among historians about the extent of his involvement in the staircase’s design, its presence in the château is a symbol of lasting influence on architecture and design.

📍 Château des Alpilles, Provence

A majestic 19th-century mansion located in the heart of Provence, France, this château is steeped in history and charm.

Originally built in the early 1820s, this château was the creation of a wealthy agricultural family, symbolizing the prosperity of the era.

It stands out for its remarkable architecture, a blend of classic Provençal style with neoclassical influences, set amidst a picturesque landscape of ancient trees and lush gardens.

During World War II, Château des Alpilles played a significant role as a safe haven for refugees, demonstrating its historical significance beyond mere architectural beauty.

Today, transformed into a luxurious hotel, the château offers visitors a glimpse into its rich past through its preserved original features and elegant ambiance, making it a living testament to the region’s history and cultural heritage.

📍 The Grand Staircase, or “Escalier Gabriel,” Château de Versailles

Designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel and originally envisioned by Louis XV, the grand staircase was meant to be a bold architectural feat, embodying the opulence and artistic ambition of the King’s reign. However, despite its grand plans, the staircase remained an unrealized project for centuries due to financial constraints. It was not until 1985, long after the fall of the French monarchy, that the staircase was finally completed. This delay is a poignant reminder of the often tumultuous and unpredictable nature of history, where even the grandest plans of kings could be left unfulfilled.

The completion of the Escalier Gabriel in 1985 was not just an architectural achievement but also a significant cultural event, symbolizing a bridge between the past and the present. This staircase, though designed in the 18th century, was completed in a time far removed from the era of its conception, offering a unique blend of historical design and modern construction techniques.

The staircase today serves as a physical embodiment of Versailles’ enduring legacy, representing not only the grandeur of the French monarchy but also the enduring relevance of historical art and architecture in contemporary times. It’s an intriguing example of how historical projects can be completed in a different era, offering a new perspective on the past.

Out in the countryside where the neighbors are far, street lights are scant, and the conveniences of modern commerce aren’t within easy reach, you learn to live with very little. But the French being the French, you also learn to do it with flair.

La Grande Cascade, a gastronomic restaurant situated in the very heart of the Bois de Boulogne.

La Grande Cascade was not always a restaurant; its exceptional and unique décor is testament to this. The pavilion originally served as a place of rest for Napoléon III, who would come to the Bois de Boulogne to hunt. Over the years La Grande Cascade evolved, bringing with it its own inimitable ‘retro-modern’ style. Fine chandeliers, elaborate gilding and antique mirroring bestow classical charm to the building, which retains all the majesty of its era.

The Salon Chinois inside Château de Haroué with its chinoiserie painting done by Jean Baptiste Pillement.

Located in a remote village in the Lorraine region of northeastern France, Château de Haroué has been inhabited by the same family since it was built by architect Germain Boffrand in 1720-29 for Marc de Beauvau, Prince de Beauvau-Craon, constable of Lorraine and viceroy of Tuscany.

The Grand Staircase Hall of Château d'Anet in Northern France 🇫🇷

Chateau d’Anet was the home of Diane de Poitiers, who was once mistress to King Henryi II and cousin to Catherine de Medici (Henri's wife). Henri adored Diane and had the medieval Chateau d’Anet redesigned for her in 1548, commissioning architect Philibert de l’Orme.

The marriage deal of Catherine and Henri II was signed at the chateau d’Anet. They wed in 1533, when they were both just 14 years old, but the vows didn’t change anything. It’s thought that Henri met Diane that same year (she was 20 years older than him) and he remained true to her throughout his life.

At the chateau a love letter from Henri II to Diane is framed, in which he tells her when he’s awake, she’s in his thoughts, when he sleeps, she’s in his dreams.

France Is Home To The World’s Most Famous Cycling Race, Tour De France

A tradition that began back in 1903, Tour de France is the world’s most famous cycling race that happens every year.

A fest that started over a century ago as a form of advertisement for L’Auto newspaper to increase their sales, today, it witnesses nearly 200 cyclists racing across France in several different segments across 23 days!
