A few more small scenes from a road trip up in Australia's Pilbara region. The landscape up there really suits this genre of photography.

Watchkeeper (2023) - An eerily quite and unexpected sunset from last years visit to Tassie. With every boulder possibly spelling a broken ankle, the reward of a dehydrated meal and an inflated mattress was well received. Quads that felt like fire, a stomach that felt like a brick and a mind full of gratitude, we departed after just one night. This fleeting visit left me wanting more. I’ll be back.

Despite It All (2023) - Stormy conditions on the south coast of NSW. I've been chasing a shot from this spot for years... It seems like a black hole for colourful sunrises, so a stormy shot will have to make do!

A few smaller scenes from last year, exploring details in the landscape with a longer lens. This is a different approach to classic wide angle photography that I always find super satisfying!

Toltec (2022) - The beautiful blue hour over a hidden lake in the mountains of Tasmania. From a few years ago, when Ben Maze Fine Art and I polished off a couple mouthfuls of scotch, chatted rubbish and faffed around with our cameras well into the night. Good times!

Crown Jewel (2023) - The multi-day off-track journey out here had been on the cards since my early days of photography. With a weather window lasting only a few days, the ascent up here was in a complete whiteout. Witnessing the mountain reveal itself the following day was surreal. We couldn't stop grinning as the moment finally came. Years of imagining finally became reality. There’s no other feeling quite like it.

Splatter (2023) – Some interesting coastal textures from a few months ago, somewhere along the Tarkine coast. Little abstract scenes like this are great fun to experiment with. Especially when the sky isn't a total colour bomb (so 99.99% of the time).

Foregone Country (2023) – Isolated in its locality but not in its beauty. The northwest of Tasmania boasts a rich history. Just 3 km north of where this photo was taken lies one of the world's most significant rock art discoveries. Aboriginal petroglyphs, dating back 4000-14000 years, are buried beneath the sand here. Some are underwater, indicating that they were carved before ocean levels rose after the last ice age. It’s difficult to even fathom the age of this country and its cultural significance to the people who first roamed its shores.

Elucidate (2023) – I stumbled upon this old myrtle beech during an offtrack hike in the Tarkine. It was a cloudy day, with light momentarily passing through the canopy. Such conditions allowed time to setup & fully appreciate the scene. No rushing here, just soaking it all in. This area contains Australia's largest Gondwanan rainforest. A living gallery from times passed, when our mainland was connected to Antarctica. It blows my mind that much of the Tarkine remains unprotected to this day…. However, that's an argument to be had outside the realms of social media.

The Big Reveal (2023) – Some of the most idyllic conditions I’ve had since picking up a camera 6 years ago. Snow whipped into my eyes while light breached the patchy clouds overhead. Ice covered granite posed, the moon stuck its head out and my cameras shutter clicked. A profoundly brief moment up in Kosciusko a few months ago.

It’s been a quiet one sharing polished photographs this year! I suppose the draw of getting out and enjoying nature has taken priority over sitting down and processing images. That’ll change though, with a new website on the way I plan on releasing some work that will inspire those that appreciate this stuff. As these platforms are not designed for us to slow down and absorb art, you can expect to find my gallery as it was intended to be viewed over there. More to come!

Belly of the Beast (2023) – Earlier this year I had the opportunity to visit New Zealand (thanks to Great Walks magazine). It seemed rude not to squeeze in a backcountry adventure during my visit, and there's no better place than Fiordland! With the company of alpine parrots overhead, I departed on a 5 day solo journey into the heart of the mountains. It was an ambitious plan, going off nothing but a few pointers from Daniel Murray Photography and a rough line on a map. In retrospect, photography became the least of my priorities as the hike went on. Navigating the rugged terrain, eating and sleeping became the primary concerns. Back to basics.

Father's Son (2022) - The verdant greens of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. There are a few patches of old-growth rainforest that are well worth exploring (if you know where to look). In December this year, native logging will finally come to a halt. Future generations can hope to enjoy these unique ecosystems, without the fear of chainsaws needlessly wiping them out. If only other states would follow suit.

Pastel Drift (2023) - Barren environments are always great fun to photograph. Without the chaos of a messy forest or crashing waves, creating striking compositions tends to come more easily. This was originally an experimental shot, taken well into the blue hour. At this time of day, shadows soften and colours deepen. Diffused light replaces the drama, easing the landscape into nightfall. Some of my favorite images are taken at dusk. I’d recommend any budding nature photographer to give it a crack!

King Toolbrunup (2023) – Stirling Ranges second highest peak, Mt Toolbrunup. Challenged only by the mighty Bluff Knoll. There was very little forethought or planning behind this image, so I was stoked to enjoy such rare light up here. Sometimes it’s just pure luck!

Dolerite Dusk (2023) - A quiet evening spent alone, some 300 metres above the ocean. These dolerite columns make up the Southern Hemisphere’s highest sea cliffs. I remember watching in awe, as rolling waves far below bounced off the vertical pillars, leaving intricate patterns in their wake.

Serpentine (2023) - A colourful seascape from my brief interlude in Western Australia. This one's Sugarloaf Rock, Dunsborough. A quick jaunt down the coast led to a stunning afternoon filled with pizzas, camp chairs and pretty sunsets. What more could a man want?

Vertigo (2019) - An older image from my first visit to the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney. I have a large A3 size print of this and I often find myself staring at it! One of my favorite moments spent behind the lens.

Three images from an afternoon spent observing the transitions of light. These were created in a remote, rugged gorge in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, late last year. Exploring these scenes in solitude allowed me to dial in frames with confidence. I found myself in a hyper state of focus, zoned in on details within the broader landscape.

10 of my favourite scenes over the past year! It’s been surprisingly productive after a rocky start in Tasmania. On retrospect, I found myself in a rut, and wasn’t really loving my stuff. However, as the year progressed my drive lifted. Huge thanks to the pals who helped make these images possible. Your knowledge and interest in showcasing these natural places were/are a huge motivation for me.

Next year I plan on dedicating more time to hiking, camping & photographing the remote landscapes of Western Australia (where I now reside). If you’d like to support my passion, feel free to purchase a fine art print via my website. As always, I appreciate the support. Until next year! 👋

Porthole (2022) – Deep within the mighty Denison Ranges of Tasmania. An ephemeral window of fog that appeared as soon as it vanished. From high above an alpine lake, I savoured each fleeting moment to the next. Encompassed by an untenable silence.

Morning Thaw (2022) - An alpine tarn, frozen over after a long night battling sub zero temperatures. I watched the ice melt before my eyes, as morning sunlight reflected off the nearby peaks. A quite moment enjoying nature that has since stuck.

Last Goodbye (2022) - Sunrise over one of Victoria's many waterfalls. Initially this scene was a total white out, with thick low level fog blocking the view…. After questioning my life choices for a solid hour, the clouds broke and the morning sun made a fleeting appearance. A spectacular send off after living in Victoria for the past two years.
