Rangers are closing gates to eliminate guest from getting stuck in the higher terrain parking lots due to projected snowfall.

Update on 112 acre Wildfire in McCormick Wilderness.

Fire Update - October 20, 2024 :

The Summit Lake Fire is burning in a remote and rugged forested area of the McCormick Wilderness consisting of both hardwood and conifer ecosystems. The area received light rain yesterday evening which quickly dried with today’s warm dry winds. Smoke will be visible in the localized area and then drifting to the northeast. At this time, there are no closures or threatened structures.

Current actions: Fire crews assessed natural holding points for halting fire progression and continued to develop strategies utilizing minimum impact suppression tactics. They have been able to actively slow fire spread in areas where broadleaf cover exists. Aircraft will be monitoring the fire and assisting crews on the ground as needed. Please do not fly unmanned aircraft systems (drones) in the area it is dangerous for aerial resources assigned to the incident.

Fire activity: The most active part of the fire is near Evergreen Lake where it is backing and burning in heavy dead and down woody debris. The rest of the perimeter is creeping and smoldering with interior pockets of heavy ground fuels being consumed.
Discovery date: October 18, 2024
Location: Northwest corner of the McCormick Wilderness between Summit Lake and Evergreen Lake. The McCormick Wilderness is located in Baraga County, 12.5 miles north of Michigamme, MI.

Cause: Under investigation
