A few words from TBBIP producer :

As we near the end of the year and slow down for a short break in production I‘ve been reflecting on the last year.

Towards the end of last year I was prepping files for the set pieces surrounding me in this picture to be laser cut by and on my way home for Christmas my boyfriend and I stopped by the studio to do some structural building ready for the art Dept to work their magic.

Looking back, and realising that a year ago we were still very much in the midst of pre-production and set build and had not even started shooting, I realise how much we have achieved this year. Although there have been really tough days, the overarching feeling I get whilst reflecting is one of gratitude. Not a day goes by when I don’t remind myself how lucky I am for this opportunity.

I have immense gratitude for ; for the beautiful and powerful poem he wrote and for entrusting us with his words; for his constant support, advice, and feedback.

I will be forever grateful to the and for believing in us and our vision.

I’m grateful to my loved ones who have shown unwavering support and picked me up on the days I’ve felt floored by the pressure of it all.

I’m grateful to , that when I said I wanted to make a film centred around my experiences coming of age as a closeted gay guy in 90s Britain, he embraced it and devoted his directing talents towards making a film that meant so much to me. Grateful to for coming on board when this was all just a seed of an idea and creating the amazing concept art that started to bring our vision to life. Grateful for the dedication that both have shown over the last three years.

And of course tremendous gratitude to all the crew who‘s immense talent, skill, attention to detail, determination, and perseverance have made the experience so rich and rewarding and got us to where we are today. With a film, almost complete, which is beyond anything I dared to dream it could be.

As my thoughts turn towards 2024, I very much look forward to sharing the finished film with everyone involved.

đŸ—Łïž A few words from TBBIP Director :

It has been humbling to see the reaction to our recent poster release for ‘Two Black Boys in Paradise’ - my sincere thanks goes to everyone who has shown us support. I was recently asked to write a statement about production on TBBIP, which I’m sharing today:

A few years ago, I was introduced to Dean Atta’s poem, ‘Two Black Boys in Paradise’ by our producer, Ben Jackson. In the months beforehand, we had been discussing creating a film that explores themes close to Ben’s heart and his experienced joys and anxieties as a gay man. In this regard, this film is a love letter to my long-term friend and collaborator who for many years has supported my progression and vision as a director.

As a stop-motion team, we’re often drawn to subjects that are bold and memorable - which is true for Dean’s poem and his voice as a writer. The poem “TBBIP” is a deeply honest and emotive piece of writing - it challenges common tropes and misconceptions about what Black and q***r identity is and celebrates what those identities actually are or could be in a personal version of Paradise. Beyond our motivation to do justice to its important themes, we knew that Dean’s poem had great visual potential, allowing us to develop a narrative that explores a variety of emotional spaces occupied by the poem.

After over three years in the making, it will be a heartfelt moment handing this film over to an audience - it is the story of Edan and Dula as they journey towards their own version of paradise, free from judgement, self-doubt, and prejudice.

TBBIP has been the most challenging film of my career so far and whilst it has received every ounce of my commitment and creativity; I wish to acknowledge that this story has always belonged to the communities we aim to represent. In that sense, making this film has been an ongoing exercise in listening to the voices of my closest collaborators, Ben and Dean. It has been an honour to tell this story alongside them both, with the help of our dedicated crew - I hope that it might become as important to others as it has been to those of us making it.

YAY - NEW WORK!

We recently had the pleasure of designing and making six trophies for ‘The Young Animator of the Year’ Awards.

These YAY awards are the first of their kind, and will be presented to the winning animators aged 11 - 18, in their respective categories on 13th November at .

Our design aims to capture the fun, energy and craft of animation. It includes a bespoke, cold cast version of the YAY lettering, which embody three beloved forms of animation - 2D, 3D and Stop-Motion. Our custom made metal plates have been aged and scratched and feature an illustration made in-house, taking inspiration from a classic “cartoon brawl” - paying homage to the graft and passion that goes into the animation process.

A classic bevelled base was cut in-house from wild mango wood and upfront, of course, are the name plates for each of the six winners.

A big thanks to ScreenSkills and for entrusting us with this great project. Congratulations to the talented young animators who entered the competition, and our deepest appreciation to our team who helped bring these awards to life.

Recently received my copy of ‘There is (Still) Love Here’ by . So much to admire about this collection of Dean's poems - The deeply considered approach to language, the humanity, the honesty - to name a few.

It also features the poem ‘Two Black Boys in Paradise’ which we are currently adapting into a stop-motion short film and boasts a cover designed by One6th art director, .

Anyway - call me biased, but this should definitely be the next book you buy!
