FG halts Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway realignment to save telecom cables, others

The Federal Government has announced the realignment of Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

Minister of Works Dave Umahi disclosed this in Lagos at the 3rd stakeholders meeting of the coastal highway project on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

He said the federal government is doing away with the proposed new route of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway from kilometres 16 to 25 and reverting to the gazetted alignment to save the telecommunications infrastructure and submarine cables, among others at the axis.
“We have three critical infrastructure that are located on one spot. One is the 2Africa submarine cable that cuts across 33 countries connecting about three billion people. That cable landed at Mopo and where it landed, the West African cable systems (WACS) had already been located there about 17 years ago.

We have a mega IPP which is to provide power to the 2Africa cable and the WACS cable. The power plant is a 50 megawatt power plant expected to support this infrastructure.

The (new) corridor is passing right on the submarine cable and the other side is on the IPP. You cannot have the submarine cables without power. They will not function. The submarine cable is a critical national security infrastructure. If it is affected, everybody will be affected,” he said.
Umahi said President Bola Tinubu would flag off the road’s construction on Sunday, May 26.

According to him, “We have fully redesigned section one, which is 47 kilometres, and we can say that we’ve done everything possible to put human face by managing the alignment. We’ve taken hard decisions and we’re happy that our decisions are not harmful.

We have also concluded the design of the road. We are concerned about some houses in this Goshen Estate.”

Nigerian man’s wedding called off after he and his fiancée were arrested over alleged $3.123m fr@ud in the U.S.

The wedding ceremony between a Nigerian man, Darlington Akporugo, and his fiancée, Jasmin Sood, which was billed to take place tomorrow, May 25 in Houston, USA, has been called off, following their arrest over alleged fr@ud.

The Fulshear couple was arrested in April on charges of conspiring to defr@ud more than a dozen elderly Americans who believed they were engaged in online romantic relationships with Akporugo.

The United States Department of Homeland Security accused the 46-year-old Nigerian and Sood, 35, of committing a mail and wire fr@ud that cost victims $3.123 million.

According to investigators, between approximately 2015 and 2022, the fr@udsters allegedly used fictitious personas and sought out and contacted elderly victims online who were often widowed.

The indictment alleges they used social networking and internet dating platforms and communicated with victims using email, text message and telephone to gain their trust.

The scammers would then ultimately deceive them into transferring large sums of money to various fraudster-controlled or influenced mailing addresses and bank accounts, many Akporugo and Sood owned or controlled, according to the charges.

After establishing trust with the victim online, Akporugo and Sood approached at least one victim in the Houston area in person, according to the allegations. They then allegedly drove the victim to banks for the purpose of sending money to the fraudster network, convincing her to give Akporugo control of the victim’s banking access devices.

The indictment also charges Akporugo with aggravated identity theft and fraud in connection with an access device. The scheme allegedly resulted at least 13 victims being defr@uded of an approximate $3,123,073.

If convicted, both face up to 30 years imprisonment for each of the wire fr@ud counts and conspiracy. Akporugo faces an additional 10 years on the fr@ud in connection with an access device and another mandatory two years if convicted of the aggravated identity th£ft.

Nigeria spends $25 billion on petrol importation yearly – VP Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has revealed that Nigeria spends $25 billion per annum on the importation of petroleum products.

He said this while speaking at an event in Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday, May 23.

According to him, “With the support our government is lending to our private sector-led oil refineries and rejuvenation of some of the state-owned facilities.

The $25 billion we spend yearly importing petroleum and other refined products will soon be a thing of the past allowing the naira a much-deserved breath.”

Shettima said the country will not hesitate to backtrack and review policies if it would impose undue hardship on Nigerians as it “has been seen over time”.

“So this administration is not out to make the life of Nigerians tougher, but to make the Nigerian economy sustainable, and the lives of our people more enjoyable.

Rest assured, ladies and gentlemen, that the next few years will be full of positive achievements. They include improvements in the standards of living, higher productivity, food security, bumper harvests and remarkable achievement with the guidance and grace of Almighty God,” he said.
