one of the best jazz albums ever!
Recorded on May 5 & 12, 1959 at Columbia 30th Street Studio⊠Mingus Ah Um
My old friend passed away last night. I was able to talk to him Wednesday and we had a pleasant conversation. He still had his sarcastic sense of humor and we told each other we loved each other. The world of roots music will be forever indebted to Chris for all the wonderful music that he recorded. Non-commercial real music from the heart. The kind of music that feeds one soul. Thank you Chris! I still remember meeting you in Chicago in 1962 like it was yesterday. Vaya con Dios, Amigo!

Remembering Paul Desmond... R.I.P. àźÜ
Paul Desmond (born Paul Emil Breitenfeld, Nov 25, 1924 â May 30, 1977) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing that group's biggest hit, "Take Five". He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the cool jazz scene.
In addition to his work with Brubeck, he led several groups and collaborated with Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Ed Bickert.
Much of the success of the classic Brubeck quartet was due to the juxtaposition of his airy style over Brubeck's sometimes relatively heavy, polytonal piano work. His rare gift for improvised counterpoint is perhaps most evident on the two albums he recorded with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan (Mulligan-Desmond Quartet and Two of a Mind). Desmond's playing was also notable for his ability to produce extremely high notes, the altissimo register, on his saxophone.

Remembering the great Chuck Berry (October 18, 1926 â March 18, 2017)
"As a guitarist, Berryâs claim as an original was clearest. âRocket 88â preceded âMaybelleneâ by several years, and Elvis Presleyâs âThatâs Alright Mamaâ a year sooner, but Berry invented the sound of rock ânâ roll guitar. You wonât find much more than the three chords that form the basis of blues and country in Berryâs oeuvre, and you wonât miss the others. Playing on semi-hollow-body Gibson guitars, Berry created a sound that drew on Charlie Christianâs clean swing, Muddy Watersâs overdrive, and T-Bone Walkerâs two-string bends. The result was a sound that was unmistakably bluesy, but just as clearly not the blues, lending itself to punchy, concise solos that remain the foundation of rock guitar.
Berry wasnât just a wit; he was a raconteur who could compress a short story into just a few verses, complete with characterization, exposition, and plot. The skill is on display in âPromised Land,â spanning the entire North American continent, and âJohnny B. Goode,â where an indelible character springs from just three verses."
