The Chaves County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division is currently assisting the Dexter Police Department with an incident that has occurred at Lake Van.

Please stay clear of that area. We have also confirmed that there is no immediate threat to the public & no suspects are outstanding.

On Friday (30 May 2025) at approximately 9:35pm Deputies were dispatched to the area of Old Dexter Hwy and Cottonwood Lane in reference to a possible accident without injury.
Deputies located a silver Dodge Charger stuck on the shoulder and partially in the roadway. The driver, identified as Alejandro Ayala-Aguirre, advised that he had missed his turn and thought it was safe to conduct a u-turn in the middle of the road. Mr. Ayala-Aguirre stated that when he made the u-turn his vehicle bottomed out on the shoulder & became stuck.
A drivers license check revealed that Mr. Ayala-Aguirre's drivers license status is "revoked", pursuant to 66-8-122G due to a DUI arrest approximately a month prior. Mr. Ayala-Aguirre did not have an interlock installed in the vehicle or the required interlock license.
Mr. Ayala-Aguirre was arrested pursuant to NM State Statute. The vehicle was tow3d from the scene & the roadway was opened back up.
