PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Dhima Martin now asks why. Why did this happen to her daughter?

"I was praying for a miracle in the hospital. Her life was a miracle. I love her. And I miss her every day, every moment," Martin told WPBF 25 News.

Her 13-year-old daughter, Symaria Glenn, was healthy. She was vibrant.

But on January 31, her life changed.

"She complained of a headache. Unbeknownst to me, how severe it was, her brain was bleeding. So, she was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Joe DiMaggio's Children Hospital," Martin said.

Her daughter was in the hospital for about a week before she died.

Her family had made the decision to donate her organs and ended up saving five people's lives.

One of them was actually the life of the teen's father. He had never told his children he was on dialysis. But he was in dire need of a kidney transplant.

And it turned out that Glenn's kidney was a match to her father's.

"She would have wanted that. She would have wanted to save her father," Martin said.

The tragedy also occurred just a couple of days before Martin was about to get married.

"Went from a time to celebrate love, to watching my daughter lay there unresponsive and unconscious and then losing her," she said.

And now, she wears beautiful, handmade bracelets that her daughter made for her as a wedding gift.

"She wanted to be an actress, so would memorize monologues, singing songs, she was a big Taylor Swift fan," Martin said.

Her daughter had big dreams-- she was a 7th grader at Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach.

"I called her my lovebug. So 'lovebug, I love you,'" Martin said. "She’s perfect, she’s amazing, she’s beautiful, and it starts on the inside."

April is Donate Life Month, and officials say, "Every 8 minutes, another person is added to the national transplant waiting list, emphasizing the urgency of the situation."

Martin and her loved ones wanted to share the heroic actions and the beautiful life of their daughter.

Laila Edwards continues to write her way into the record books scoring in the second period of Team USA's World Championship game against Czechia.

Minutes later she scored her second of the night beating Czechia's Klara Peslarova on a shorthanded breakaway.

Edwards was an integral part of the University of Wisconsin's attack this season scoring 21 goals and 56 points in 41 games for the Badgers.

She made her national team debut earlier this season in the Rivalry Series.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter gallops in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 13), debuting with 407,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 4, according to Luminate. It’s the superstar’s eighth No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

With 407,000 units earned, Cowboy Carter claims the biggest week of 2024 and the largest since Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) bowed with 1.653 million units on the Nov. 11, 2023-dated list. Cowboy Carter’s launch is also Beyoncé’s biggest week, by units, since her Lemonade album debuted at No. 1 with 653,000 units (mostly from traditional album sales) on the May 14, 2016, chart. The new effort also lands BeyoncĂ© her biggest streaming week ever.

Cowboy Carter also launches at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums, Americana/Folk Albums and Top Album Sales charts. She’s the first Black woman ever to have led the Top Country Albums list, dating to its January 1964 inception. Cowboy Carter also claims the biggest week for a country album, by units earned, since last July, when Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), opened at No. 1 on the July 22, 2023 chart with 716,000 units. Congrats!

10/04/2024

In 2015, Copeland sprang into the highest echelons of dance when she became the first African American woman to be a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, one of the most prestigious and well-renowned dance companies in the world.

Being the first is a difficult, but familiar position for Copeland, who’s often spent her dance career as one of the only Black dancers in the room or on stage.

There were also instances of discrimination that could have easily turned Copeland away from dance all together.

“There were times that I was not cast in certain roles because I would stand out too much and kind of ruin the aesthetic, especially if it was a performance that was being filmed,” Copeland told Wallace.

Yet, in the fall of 2014, almost a year before she would become a principal dancer, Copeland would make history as the first Black ballerina to perform the lead role of “Odette/Odile” in American Ballet Theatre’s “Swan Lake.”

It’s a prized role coveted by dancers in one of the world’s most popular classical ballets. But, Copeland said, as a Black ballerina her casting also stirred mixed emotions.

“I think about this kind of generational trauma for Black dancers that comes with that role,” she said. “We’ve been told, for so many decades and generations that the swans should be white, that that’s not a role that can be played by a Black or brown woman.”

Copeland said she worried that “if my artistic excellence isn’t up to someone’s standards, that maybe there won’t be another Black woman at American Ballet Theatre who is given this opportunity. And that was something that weighed on me leading up to that first performance.”

Since her career-defining turn in Swan Lake, Copeland has used her status to shine a spotlight on Black women and the diversity in dance, changing the perception of who can be a ballerina.

Wallace’s entire conversation is airing now on Max.

09/04/2024

Lewisham’s first black and female has been voted as the new Mayor.

Brenda Dacres, member of the Labour and Co-operative Party, has been named the new directly elected Mayor of Lewisham.

Mayor Dacres won with a final count of 21,575 votes, after securing 51.5 percentage of the total votes in yesterday's election which saw a turnout of 20.74 percent.

First becoming a councillor in 2014, Ms Dacres represented wards in both the New Cross and Deptford area, and later became Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing Development and Planning in 2021.

Mayor Dacres has also held the Environment and Transport Safer Communities briefs.

The new Mayor has lived in Lewisham for four decades, after her parents first came to England from Jamaica in the 1960s as part of the Windrush generation, with her father working as a mechanic and black cab driver, and her mother as an NHS nurse.

Brenda later attended university at London South Bank, completing a degree in Physical Sciences with Computing, before undertaking Law degree at the University of Wolverhampton, and was called to the Bar in 2006 by Middle Temple.

Mayor Dacres expressed “excitement” to begin her new post as Mayor and added that she would focus on driving forward change in the borough, ensuring that “voices of residents and businesses” were heard.

Mayor Dacres said: “It's a privilege and an honour to be the first Black woman to serve as a directly elected Mayor in the UK.

“I'm excited to be in a position to drive forward the changes we need to ensure we keep moving Lewisham forward and make sure the voices of residents and businesses are heard.

“I've spent a lifetime fighting against low expectations.

“I didn't accept them for me and I'll never accept them for Lewisham residents.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Helena-West Helena Police responded to a murder-suicide on Wednesday.

Officers say they received a call in the morning about a man on Market Street who’d been shot.

When they arrived, they spoke with a woman, Sally Mills, who said that her son Jermod Johnson had shot his sister Starla and then himself.

The witness led detectives to 16-year-old Starla’s body, which was lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor. While examining the body, they found signs of an apparent gunshot wound to her head.

Near her body, they found the body of Johnson. It appeared he also had a gunshot wound to the head. He was 27-years-old.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene by the police.

The witness claimed the incident started when her children had got into an argument. Supposedly, Johnson was upset that Starla had given him a dirty look.

The witness then said that Johnson began to spit on his sister, which made the argument turn more volatile. The witness said she tried to separate the two, but he continued to try to spit on Starla.

He then walked off and came back with her pistol. The witness said that he fired a single shot, but it did not hit Starla.'

As the argument worsened, Johnson allegedly shot Starla in the head.

The witness was not sure how many times he shot, but she knew the gun went off approximately three or four times.

After shooting his sister, the witness said that Johnson then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.

The mother says she bought the gun for protection due to the crime in the neighborhood. She also says her son suffered from “flashbacks” to incidents while growing up.

Both bodies were sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab.

The mother says she has no financial insurance and no financial means to bury her children. To help donate the money you can cash app $Millssally41 or message her on Facebook here.

08/04/2024

South Carolina’s head coach Dawn Staley was brought to tears and hardly able to speak after her team beat Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA Championship on Sunday.

With this victory, Staley has become the first Black coach - male of female - to win three Division 1 basketball titles. She was already the first Black coach to win multiple titles after her 2017 and 2022 wins.

In 2017, when she won her first title, Staley cut off a piece of the net to give to Carolyn Peck, who was the first Black woman to ever win a championship. Peck gave Staley a gift as well - a piece o the white nylon she saved from when she won that title with Purdue in 1999. This was just one example of many in which Staley kept sentimental souvenirs from her victories and shared them with others.

When Staley’s South Carolina team beat UCONN in 2022, she cut off part of the net herself and wrapped it around her neck as she danced to “Just Fine” by Mary J. Blige.

Now that she’s won her third title, Staley plans to take this net, too, and split it up to send to Black male coaches of women’s basketball teams as well as Black college basketball journalists - two groups she says are underrepresented. She asked for them to contact her by email or phone since it will be harder for her to find them.

“I felt a great deal of pressure to win because I’m a Black coach,” Staley said. “Because if we don’t win, then you bring in, just scrutiny. Like, ‘You can’t coach, you had enough to get it done but yet you failed.’ You feel all of that, and you feel it probably 10 times more than anyone else because we’re at this platform. It really makes me emotional. It does. Because I am their hope. I am the person that they strive (to be because of) where I sit winning national championships. That’s what they want to do.”

After winning her third title with South Carolina, Staley made sure to give a shoutout and big thanks to Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, who’s played a huge role in bringing national attention to the sport of women’s college basketball.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A St. Louis woman is charged with murder in an incident Saturday where police say she also shot a woman, killing her.

31/03/2024

A new adaptation of Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" is in the works, and the cast includes "Abbott Elementary" creator and star Quinta Brunson.

The animated film will premiere in theaters on March 6, 2026, Variety reported. Brunson's role has not yet been specified, but "Barry" star Bill Hader will lead the cast in the role of the titular feline.

Along with Brunson and Hader, the vocal ensemble for the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation flick includes Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry and Paula Pell. Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, and Hader will executive produce the film.

This isn't the first time the classic children's book, which was written and illlustrated by Dr. Seuss and published in 1957, has been adapted for the screen. A live-action version starring Mike Myers was released in 2003, earning $134 million and scathing critical reviews.

In this new feature version, directed and written by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, the Cat takes on the task of cheering up a pair of siblings who just moved to a new town, according to Deadline.

“The Cat in the Hat” will reportedly be the first feature to debut as part of a slate of animated projects that Warner Bros. Pictures Animation is developing with Dr. Seuss Enterprises.

West Philly-native Brunson recently earned her second Emmy for "Abbott Elementary," when she was awarded outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. In May, she will receive an award and an honorary degree from Temple University, where she attended for a year, and address the graduating class during the school's commencement. In a new interview with The New Yorker, Brunson said she hopes to make a "coming of age" show about a teen girl.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A woman was killed in a murder-suicide that happened on the 1700 block of SE 12th Street in Cape Coral Wednesday morning.

Cape Coral police responded to the scene around 9:34 a.m. after receiving reports that a woman in her mid-30s had been shot and was lying in the street near the mailbox.

The man and woman have been identified as D’angelo Gilliam, 34, and Tiffani Starkey, 34.

He reportedly drove away with the two young children to SE 12th Terrace, a nearby street, and handed them off to firefighters.

A dive team responded and pulled his body out of the water. A medical examiner was also on scene.
