Cecily Brown’s “The Splendid Table” marks a historic milestone as the first of her works to join the Dallas Museum of Art’s collection, generously donated by The Rachofsky Collection and The Hartland & Mackie Family / Labora Collection. Now featured in her largest retrospective to date, the exhibition showcases Brown’s reinterpretation of historical painting, where she challenges gendered stereotypes, redefines women as fully realized creators and subjects, and solidifies their place within the history of art. On view through February 9, 2024.

Carolina Alvarez-Mathies will resign from her role as Executive Director of Dallas Contemporary to join the OMR gallery in Mexico City as Senior Director of Institutional Relations and the first Artistic Director of LagoAlgo. She has been instrumental in enhancing museum engagement and has maintained free programming, helping the museum achieve record fundraising. Alvarez-Mathies stated, “I couldn’t be more proud of everything that our organization has accomplished over the last few years. Dallas Contemporary has driven engagement with the public to new heights, initiating boundary-breaking programs and partnerships to rethink what a museum can be. I am excited to watch this institution continue to shape artistic discourse in Dallas and be a provocative voice in the art world.”

Lucia Simek, previously the Director of External Affairs and Deputy Director at Dallas Contemporary, has been named the Interim Executive Director. She has launched significant initiatives such as DC PERFORMANCE and DC EMPTY and established partnerships with local arts organizations. Cliff Risman, board chair, expressed, “We would like to thank Carolina for her energetic leadership and tireless efforts to elevate Dallas Contemporary in the local, national, and international art community, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Under Simek’s leadership, the museum looks forward to a vibrant future with a strong program lineup, including the inaugural Staff Exhibition and the presentation of various contemporary artists’ works. The museum will also host its annual fundraiser gala this September to support its mission of offering leading contemporary art and programming at no charge.
