A Manitoban bull elk exiting the woods.

This picture was taken October 2023 around 9:40 a.m. near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. I had been out since 7:30 a.m. watching and waiting for this bull and another bull to cross the river. I didn’t get the river shot this year, but was excited to have gotten this one. I also witnessed my first rut (towards the end of it) and got a few sparring and bugling shots.

Twenty-five Manitoban elk were reintroduced into the Great Smoky Mountains in 2001. In 2002, twenty-seven more were introduced. Their population now is estimated at around 200 in the park.

Manitoban bull elk (males) can weigh upwards of 700 lbs and cows (females) can weigh up to 500 pounds.
