McFarland West Public Boat Ramp Reopens with New Launching Slab

The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has reopened the larger of the two ramps at the McFarland Public Boat Ramp facility (McFarland West) on Pickwick Reservoir in Florence. McFarland West was closed in November 2024 to replace the facility’s damaged three-lane launching slab.

The access pier at McFarland North will also be replaced, which may cause a temporary closure of the facility’s two-lane boat ramp. McFarland West will remain open during renovations to McFarland North.

“McFarland Park is a great asset to northwest Alabama,” said Chris Blankenship, ADCNR Commissioner. “The City of Florence has great plans for other work at McFarland Park. The renovation of the launching ramp and the new access pier will be a great addition to this park for continued fishing, hunting and boating access. We appreciate our partnership with the City of Florence and Innovate Alabama on this important project.”

This boating access improvement project was completed through a partnership between ADCNR and the City of Florence. Funding for this project was provided through the Sport Fish Restoration Program, which is supported through excise taxes on the sale of outboard motor fuel, fishing equipment and the sale of Alabama fishing licenses. Additional funding was provided by the City of Florence and Innovate Alabama, a statewide public-private partnership focused on entrepreneurship, technology and innovation with a mission to help businesses grow roots in Alabama.

ADCNR and the City of Florence will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, March 14, 2025, to celebrate the completion of the renovation project. The ribbon cutting is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Additional information about the event will be posted to www.outdooralabama.com when available.

For more information about this and other public boating access areas provided by ADCNR, visit http://boatramps.dcnr.alabama.gov or call the WFF Fisheries Section at (334) 242-3471.

Alabama's McCarty’s Ferry Public Boat Ramp Reopens after Facility Upgrades

The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has reopened the McCarty’s Ferry Public Boat Ramp on the Tombigbee River. The boat ramp is located at the end of McCarty’s Ferry Road, which intersects with Ararat Road south of Butler, Alabama, in Choctaw County.
During the closure an additional launching slab was installed. Due to chronic siltation issues at the facility's existing launching slab, the new launching slab was constructed directly into the river channel. The existing launching slab was also extended and will be available for use during periods of high water. Two concrete parking lots were also constructed and the 1.5 mile entrance road to the facility will be repaved in the coming months.

Snow is falling in the south today so here is a throw back to 2015 practicing on Lake Guntersville for my second ever Elite event………….❄️

I only had a few days and I wasn’t going to stop, my motivation to compete against the top anglers in the world was on fire. I had also never seen snow before in my life so I was loving it!

I made my first top 10 in that Elite event catching them on the bridges with a jig, I was on Bassmaster Live all week and it was one of the most insane experiences of my life at the time.

When I got back to the ramp this day my truck was the only one in the car park and it was so covered in snow I could barely see it and get out, I couldn’t see the boat ramp. The drive home was wild with no tracks on the road, I didn’t see a human for a few days as it was the most snow that area had seen for a long time.

Great memories to look back on now!

The Evolution of Southern Fishing News

Prior to the establishment of Southern Fishing News, the publisher and editor, Ron McDonald, got involved in the bass fishing industry while still on active duty with the Army as a helicopter pilot. A trip from Ft. 📷Rucker, AL to B.A.S.S. headquarters in Montgomery, AL to meet with longtime editor Bob Cobb. Cobb’s review of some preliminary cartoon drawings led to the publication of “Billy Bass & Charlie Carp” cartoons in Bassmaster Magazine. Later, the former National Bass fishing organization’s magazine published McDonald’s story and cartoon series called “Anheuser Ambush”.

The present day Southern Fishing News has roots in the “Southern Fishing” television show in the late 70’s.📷 The show was broadcast from a local TV station based in Florence, AL. Southern Fishing’s television show ran for two years, first as a thirty minute production once a week, then as a nightly part of the station’s news broadcast five nights a week.

The follow-up to the television show was the establishment of a large Southern Fishing website featuring stories, fishing artwork, photos, tournament schedules tournament results, product news, lure field tests, cartoons and more.
