Let me tell you a story about a boy and a girl. He loved to sing while he twirled. I watched them dreamβ€”they were sixteen, too young to face reality. Somehow, we fell apart; I wonder if they’re all right. But if you’re out there, I hope you are both okay.

I remember singing along to BeyoncΓ© by the bay with my head on her lap. He laughed as her fingers gently combed through my hair. I smiled at themβ€”hesitating to speak until I blurted: β€œCan we stay happy?”

They exchanged glances before turning to me. β€œOf course,” she smiled. You’re happy if you choose to be.” I gazed into the distance, pondering, β€œCan I do that? β€œNoticing my silence, the boy pulled me close. β€œLet’s stay happy forever,” he whispered.

Their eyes met againβ€”fleeting uncertainty. β€œForever sounds complicated…” she murmured, wrapping an arm around me.
β€œThen let’s promise to be here at this moment,” I said, closing my eyes. They tightened their embrace, each of their hands linking with mine. At that exact moment, I felt the happiest.

But when I opened my eyes, it was gone.

I lay on the same bay, eyes on the sky, reminiscing about the two. I turned to the two urns holding the names of the boy and the girl.

β€œMom, Dad, I love you and hope you’re okay. Until we meet againβ€”someday, along the bay.”

As the new year approaches, a quiet feeling of uncertainty and nervousness persists. People gather, some with joyful hearts and some with doubts about the future. Amidst the shimmering fireworks, loud celebrations, and shared laughter, there is a shared longing of hopeβ€”that the year ahead will bring new opportunities, discoveries, and fresh experiences waiting to unfold.

We have made countless unforgettable memories stored deep in our hearts of joy, sadness, and pain. These fleeting moments have shaped us into who we are today, and they cling to us as time passes. We are reminded to live our lives to the fullest. As the past has been written, we now hold the pen for our future. The pages ahead are filled with curiosity, waiting for the new stories we can create, the challenges we will face, and the risks we have yet to take.

Let us find the strength to start a new beginning. We must embrace each day with eager anticipation for what it brings us, trusting that it can offer a chance for growth and change. Between the old and new years, we can commit ourselves to leaving behind old fears, doubts, and bad habits. The future may appear as a dark and perilous tunnel, but it lies within us to move forward with courage and dedication, knowing that the light awaits us at the end.

May we not be weighed down by the shadows of what we once were but embrace the brimming potential we have as a person. The past year has left its marks; some are scars, and some are life-long lessons, but it has all played a role in the strength we carry within us. These serve as symbols of our growth and survival, reminders of our resilience across the storms. As we step into the future, let us honor our journey and the person we’ve become while opening ourselves to long-lasting lessons and endless possibilities that the upcoming year may give us. With the hope of what lies ahead, let us fearlessly await what awaits us. For every ending lies a new beginning; we step forward towards a new year, guided by the light of tomorrow.

What does it mean to be a hero? Is it found in grand acts of bravery, or can it be in the quiet yet powerful act of using one's voice to fight for what is right? As we celebrate Rizal Day, we are reminded of JosΓ© Rizal, the man who chose his pen over a sword and lit the spark of revolution with his words. What can we learn from his life, and how can we honor his legacy today?

JosΓ© Rizal's life reminds us that true heroism lies in using our talents and passion for the greater good. Despite the challenges of his time, he chose to fight oppression with his pen, inspiring a nation to rise and believe in its strength. His unwavering love for the Philippines, coupled with his courage to challenge injustice, teaches us that one person's vision and sacrifice can change the course of history. This Rizal Day, may we be inspired to live with purpose, strive for knowledge, and work toward a brighter future for our nation.

____________________________________________

β€œAma, Anak at Espiritu Santo. Amen.”

Parehas silang may dalang maleta at bagahe.

"Of course I can do it; I'm a man!” I overheard, as my co-worker got promoted to a higher position in our office. I walked past with irritation. As a woman, we have been belittled and frowned upon by those who think they are superior to others. Men dominate every field and every society, making them stand out and be the best version of themselves. How can a woman like me be the best version of myself?

I glanced up at the dusty, dim sky when I found myself at home. My thoughts wandered to how a woman like me, with flaws and mistakes, could be admirable in the eyes of others. Can I win them by becoming the company's CEO or being the most beautiful woman in the office?
I held a small, long plastic in my hands, feeling its features from time to time, the two lines signifying a change in my life. I sat on the windowsill and thought of my life: I didn't think it would be over; I believed it would signify something new and beautiful. It's my way of doing something remarkable, marvelous, and immaculate.

An hour ago, I discovered I'm bearing a child, and I know, from observation, that being a mother is hardβ€”it's a lifelong job that a woman takes to care for her child. There is no "guidebook" to motherhood; no one knows the dos and don'ts. It's a learning experience. I admire motherhood, where the parent and baby learn their way through life. What type of person will my baby turn into? Will they be kind, loving, or helpful? Those things keep me awake at night, wondering how to nurture my baby.

Maybe that's what Saint Anne felt when she conceived her beautiful and loving Mary; all those fears and expectations were washed away when she held her baby. I glanced up at the calendar. December 8, I smiled, knowing in the heavens, another version of me was rejoicing in their conceiving of Mary. Ineffabilis Deus. Ineffable God.

When I soon gave birth to my baby, it was a girl. The doctors asked me what name I had in mind for the child. I answered without hesitation, β€œMary." I smiled. How can a woman like me be the best version of myself? I know I am full of flaws and errors, but all those fears were replaced with joy and satisfaction when I got to hold the child of my dreams in my armsβ€”I know I am the luckiest woman alive.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception should be regarded as one of the most important feasts in the Advent calendar. It celebrates the conception of Saint Anne and her conception of Mary without sin, almost parallel to when Mary conceived of her Son. Although Mary was an important figure, there wouldn't be a Mary if it weren't for her mother, who carried her for nine months. Mary is God's gift to humanityβ€”and every child born is a blessing and gift to the world.

The cold breeze nipped at my face, blowing my hair away as the crowd gathered around the towering Christmas tree, waiting for it to light up. Laughter and playful chatter filled the area as everyone sang to the music.

I stood quietly, people-watching while my thoughts drifted into the sea of voices. Then, out of nowhere, I felt itβ€”a familiar presence beside me, bumping against my shoulder. My heart skipped as I turned slightly, trying to see without being obvious.

And there he was. Standing so close that I could feel his warmth even in the chill. It was like no time had passed, yet everything had changed. The crowd started chanting before I could even process the rush of emotions.

β€œ3, 2, 1…”

Everyone shouted in bliss as the colorful light brought out a dazzling spark of smiles from the people surrounding the tree.

The lit-up tree brightens up the darkness in the field. Turning the gloom into a glow within my eyes, I turned to the direction of where he stood right by me.

With the crowd shouting again for the twinkling bursts of the fireworks, I looked at him; he asked me, β€œIt’s beautiful, isn’t it?” wherein I answered with a nod. β€œIt is, indeed," I said, not taking my eyes off him.’

The night sky lit up with bursts of colors, each firework painting fleeting masterpieces against the darkness. She stood beside him, the chill of the evening brushing her skin, yet the warmth of his presence lingered close. They didn’t hold hands this time, though their fingers once knew the paths to intertwine.

They used to dream under these lights, their laughter mingling with the crowd’s cheers.

Tonight, there was only silence between them.

Another burstβ€”gold and silver streaks cascading down like falling stars. She tilted her head to glance at him, catching the reflection of fireworks in his eyes. He wasn’t looking at the sky.

The finale came, filling the world with brilliant chaos. For a moment, it was as if the silence between them didn’t exist. But as the last spark faded, so did the illusion.

And as she turned to leave, the stars above felt a little dimmer without the fireworks.
