The community is invited to celebrate the magazine’s 51th edition with a free, virtual public reading on Thursday, January 7 at 7 p.m. The reading will be broadcast live on Clatsop Community College’s page.

There’s no need to sign up for Facebook to view the live reading, which can also be accessed later. Simply search for Clatsop Community College’s page or go to this link: https://www.facebook.com/clatsopcc/

Many of the magazine’s contributors will be on hand to read. This year’s edition includes new writing from Robert Michael Pyle, Wayne Downing, Florence Sage, Jim Dott, John Ciminello, Sophie Bayla, Elizabeth Winters, Jan Bono, Joanne Rideout and others. With a special section on the theme of “Broken,” there’s new work from local writers and artists on what it’s like to live in the pandemic era and much more.

Thanks for having me ASG! You are a tremendous support in these trying times. If anyone has any questions they’re very friendly and willing to work with you! As the saying goes, the worst someone can say is no 😉
Thank you 10x over for all you do to support the students and the support you’re lending to support us here at Rain Magazine!

I’m excited to see the STEP program in action and know that many students could really benefit from having a food bank on campus.

These times are trying and isolating so remember to reach out to all those around you! It’s hard on all of us, but the more connections we tend to with others the better we feel.

~Elizabeth Winters

Here’s how we’re staying ! At today’s meeting we discussed upcoming events, the new STEP program (available to students who qualify for SNAP), the future of Rain Magazine, and much more. Most of all, we want to be available to connect students to resources. Let us know how we can help you ‘grow where you’re planted.’ 🌱

DM or eMail [email protected] to request join our meetings! This term we plan to hold meetings via zoom every other Wednesday at 5pm resuming again May 6th! 🦝

See the upcoming student success eMail for more information!

Here's a poem from Janice Thompson, thank you for sending it in!
Elm Street

Elm Street, now devoid of elms,
Lies naked in the sun
For trees were merely idle things
And mattered to no one.
Ah, lush, green lawns of chamomile
Which so perfumed the air
Now lie 'neath asphalt painted green
And plastic flowers bear.
Birch Street, now devoid of birch,
Lies naked in the sun.
Transition to this modern state
The pride of everyone.
Where once migrating birds would rest
Upon a branch to sing
Now thrive stark rows of wired poles
And droned jackhammering.
Oak Street, now devoid of oak,
Lies naked in the sun
Where people of a common breed,
Quite commonly as one,
Have killed true creativity,
and life, and missed it none
Wherever streets devoid of trees
Lie naked in the sun.

Hello Raniacs! We are saddened that we must postpone the release of Rain Magazine but we don’t want to postpone the celebration of local arts! If any past contributors would like to send us previously accepted submissions to post on the page in the mean time we’d love to post them and reminisce!
We were considering posting a few ourselves but since we are unable to access the computer lab where most of our files are stored, doing so would be a tricky endeavor.

It may be harder to post longer stories, but if you have a picture/file of your submission and send it to our page through messenger we’ll do our best to post it! Cheers!

We at Rain Magazine wish you all well in these troubling times.
Rain Magazine wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of local businesses so we’d like to thank all businesses who have contributed! We’d like to give thanks continually as these times press on.
One business we’d like to thank is Frite & Scoop!
They are open from Tuesday to Thursday from 1pm to 6pm ☺️

Announcement from Rain Magazine

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rain Magazine, Clatsop Community College's journal of arts and literature, will be postponing the publication of its 51st annual issue until September 2020 with a reception and reading date to be announced.

With the campus fully online through Spring term and under a restriction on public gatherings, we feel this is the most responsible option available for now, but look forward to sharing some great work with the public as soon as possible.

Support for the arts always feels the pinch early when finances sputter or retract. Rain has long depended on the generosity of our local business community to print a handsome journal with as much full color as we can afford.

Right now, our local businesses are hurting bad, with shuttered doors and massive layoffs, and it is not the time to ask for the regular contributions we usually receive.

If you would like to contribute a private donation to Rain Magazine you can do so:

Checks should be made payable to Clatsop Community College- Rain Magazine and sent to

Rain Magazine

1651 Lexington Ave.

Astoria, OR 97103

The college business office will also process your credit card, if you choose that form of payment. The college phone number is (503) 325-0910. As always, a list of patrons will be included in this year’s Rain Magazine.

To those who have submitted art and writing to this year’s issue expect correspondence on the status of your submission shortly now that we have made this decision to postpone publication.

Rain would not have survived for more than 50 years without the continued support of our local community. Even in this time of social isolation, let’s come together to support local arts and businesses! Thank you!

Official Press Release: Submissions are open!

ASTORIA — Rain Magazine, Clatsop Community College’s long-running literary arts publication, welcomes submissions through Saturday, Feb. 15, for the 2020 edition.

Rain welcomes submissions from the public as well as CCC students and area high school students. This year’s theme section will meditate upon the idea of “Broke”. This could include poverty, divorce, political division, jail breaks, horse breaking, breaking free, breaking bad — however the writer or artist interprets the concept.

All general submissions of art, fiction, poetry and nonfiction will be also considered. Submit no more than three items total, including poems, photographs, high-quality (at least 300 dpi) digital images of original artwork and prose less than 5,000 words in length. Label your work by its appropriate genre (poetry, fiction, nonfiction) in a cover letter or on the manuscript.

The ability to print color is limited, so artists submitting color images should indicate if the image may appear in black and white.

Include name, address, phone number, email, title, medium and a short biography with all entries.

Email submissions to [email protected]. Include your full name along with genres and titles of submissions in the subject line of your email message. You can also mail submissions to Rain Magazine, Clatsop Community College, 1651 Lexington Ave., Astoria, OR, 97103, though email is preferred.
