COGNITIVE DISSONANCE AND ITS TENTACLES

Cognitive dissonance refers to the mental discomfort or psychological tension that arises when a person holds contradictory beliefs, attitudes, or values, or when their behavior conflicts with their beliefs or values. It occurs when there is an inconsistency between different cognitions, which are thoughts, opinions, or pieces of knowledge that individuals have.

The theory of cognitive dissonance was developed by psychologist Leon Festinger in the 1950s. According to Festinger, when people experience cognitive dissonance, they feel a strong motivation to reduce or eliminate the discomfort by changing their beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors.

Cognitive dissonance can arise in various situations. For example, it can occur when a person holds two conflicting beliefs or attitudes. For instance, someone who considers themselves environmentally conscious but frequently uses single-use plastic bottles may experience cognitive dissonance. Similarly, it can occur when a person's behavior conflicts with their beliefs or values. For example, a person who values honesty but tells a lie may experience cognitive dissonance.

To reduce cognitive dissonance, individuals usually employ several strategies. One common strategy is to change one's beliefs or attitudes to align with their behavior. In the previous examples, the environmentally conscious person may rationalize their use of plastic bottles by downplaying the environmental impact or seeking out information that supports their behavior. Another strategy is to change behavior to align with beliefs or attitudes. In this case, the person may start using reusable bottles to be more consistent with their environmental values.

People may also seek out new information or reinterpret existing information to reduce cognitive dissonance. For example, if a person holds a certain belief and encounters evidence that contradicts it, they may either ignore or reinterpret that evidence to maintain consistency and reduce dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance plays a significant role in decision-making, attitude formation, and behavior change. By understanding cognitive dissonance, psychologists and researchers can gain insight into why people hold certain beliefs or act in specific ways, and how they can be influenced to change their attitudes or behaviors.

I know a woman who works as a serial es**rt. Despite my attempts to persuade her to change her ways, she steadfastly refused to repent. Unexpectedly, she handed me an invitation to her wedding, which left me unsure whether to congratulate her or not. Our shared understanding of the situation led both of us to break into a fit of laughter. I couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the unsuspecting man who believed he had found his future wife. I seized the opportunity to preach to her once more, urging her to quit her profession as an es**rt now that she was getting married. However, she confessed that it would be challenging for her to quit due to the substantial income it provided.

The movie Jagun Jagun is a well scripted Yoruba production. The actors, actions, story, drama, and the suspense are concisely and properly documented.
My main pique is the language...The use of the Yoruba in a very native manner is one of the plausible aspect of the movie. It gives you chills to learn more about your culture and put in more effort not to forget the heritage it holds.
I recommend it for the weekend....Get it on your B-List.
