The mini horse is a certified animal for the pet therapy program at Queen's North Hawai‘i Community Hospital in Kamuela.

As of late afternoon Thursday, the Waimea certified pet therapy animal, the first from Hawai‘i to be nominated, had raised $10,013 so far and was No. 1 on the leaderboard. The fundraising competition through Pet Partners ends March 18 and Darby is looking for everyone’s support.

Kaua‘i County Council Chair Mel Rapozo introduced a resolution on Wednesday urging the state legislature to oppose Senate Bill 3335, a measure that would make recreational cannabis legal in the state effective Jan. 1, 2026. After a lengthy debate, the county council voted in a 3-3 tie, deferring the resolution for reconsideration on March 13.

The new program also provides first responders with thermal imaging technology for night operations when requested by an agency, and equips the organization with the most advanced tools available to save lives, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.

The grant provides for the acquisition and deployment of drones, training for SAR teams, and the development of an integrated system to facilitate SAR operations in Kaua‘i County.
