In 2001, the Wild Writing Women, a San Francisco Bay Area travel writing group of which I was a member, decided to self-publish a book of stories. Why? Because none of us could find a traditional publisher for what we thought was our best writing.

While it’s important in fiction to have a wonderful and exceptional manuscript, sadly that doesn’t make your work salable or marketable. You've got to have an audience.

I run across this advice frequently—and I used to offer up some version of it, e.g., focus on perfecting your work first before you jump into submitting.
