About three kilometers from Ribera stands the suggestive Castle of Poggiodiana.
The castle stands on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the Verdura River.
It took its name in the 16th century from the noblewoman Diana Moncada, wife of Count Gian Vincenzo Luna, but it was already known in the Saracen era with the name of Misilcassino.
In fact it was built by the Saracens in the 9th century and fortified by the Normans in the 12th.
An underground tunnel used as an escape route was recently found.
The brave deeds of the noble woman are remembered as Nicolò Inglese writes:
“One winter night, the silence was broken by the echo of the tolling of the bell: an alarm signal. The castle was attacked but Diana Moncada did not run to one of the secret passages, she boldly faced the assailants and forced them to retreat with losses”
A circa tre chilometri da Ribera sorge il suggestivo Castello di Poggiodiana.
Il castello si erge su uno sperone roccioso circondato dal fiume verdura.
Prese il suo nome nel XVI secolo dalla nobildonna Diana Moncada, sposa del conte Gian Vincenzo Luna, ma era già noto in epoca saracena con il nome di Misilcassino.
Infatti fu edificato dai saraceni nel IX secolo e fortificato dai Normanni nel XII.
Ultimamente è stato ritrovato un tunnel sotterraneo utilizzato come via di fuga.
Della nobil donna si ricordano le gesta coraggiose come scrive infatti Nicolò Inglese:
“Una notte d'inverno il silenzio fu rotto dallo echeggiare dei rintocchi della campana: segnale d'allarme. Il castello veniva attaccato ma Diana Moncada non corse ad uno dei passaggi segreti, affrontò arditamente gli assalitori e li costrinse a ritirarsi con perdite”
