Christopher Mallett's latest album,
'Justin Holland: Guitar Works and Arrangements'—the
follow-up to his 2015 debut, 'The Porcelain
Tower'—sheds long-overdue light on Justin Holland’s
contributions to the classical guitar world. On the
album’s tracks, Mallett breathes new life into music that
has languished since Holland’s passing more than a
century ago. “This project has been dear to my heart
for many years, and I am excited to share it with the
world,” Mallett says. Read more:

A young guitarist recently reached out to us and we wanted to share her work with you. Check out Beatrix Kovács’ recent video of “Norwegian Miniatures” by Maria Linnemann.

“In 2020, during the pandemic, I was still a music university student, so I tried to find ways to start my career without performing,” she wrote to us. “I stream my rehearsals three times a week on Twitch, and I started making music and educational videos on YouTube while also sharing short bits of music on Instagram.”

In a time when many musicians saw their livelihood suddenly taken away, Beatrix’ quick pivot to sharing performances online helped her find an audience. “Over time, a lovely community emerged around me, and now I am a full-time content creator and musician,” she says. “I have over 6 million views on my YouTube channel, 160K followers on Instagram, and I released my debut album half a year ago.”

Did you discover any new musicians to follow during the pandemic? What steps did you take to pivot your career during that time?

Don’t let the appearance of so many well-known pop songs fool you into thinking these are just simple tunes.

The nimble and expressive Colombian classical guitarist Irene Gómez has always played a diverse repertoire, as befits a musician whose varied guitar education included programs in her native country, in France, and at Juilliard in New York, where she studied with Sharon Isbin.

Andrés Segovia was born on February 21, 1893. To mark his 130th birthday, we spoke with three contemporary guitarists who each studied with the Maestro: Lily Afshar, Liona Boyd, and Michael Chapdelaine.

Each of our guests shares their experience of playing for Segovia when they were students and explores how that impacts the way they see music today.

To mark the 130th birthday of Andres Segovia, we spoke with three contemporary guitarists who each studied with the maestro: Lily Afshar, Liona Boyd, and Michael Chapdelaine.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard, a doctorate from the University of Southern California, and winning some big competitions, Byun is now focused on launching her professional career. This is a destination she’s moved toward steadily since making her stage debut at age 11.

Many of the musical goals she sets entail identifying and isolating problem passages in the pieces she’s learning. She first searches for the optimal fi*****ng and then works the passage slowly, steadily bringing the music up to tempo in subsequent practice sessions. “I look at a problem. If it’s a scale, I figure out if the trouble is in the right or left hand or in the way I am thinking about it. Half of the time I find I’m making something harder than it should be.”

South Korea–born classical guitar virtuoso Bokyung Byun (aka “Bo”) is riding a wave of musical achievements.

In addition to the set pieces, the competitors had to perform 20-minutes of music of their own choice from the 20th century until today. Again, the finalists had very different approaches to this challenge: Butten chose Britten’s Nocturnal; Topchii chose La Grand Sarabanda by Brouwer and Rodrigo’s Toccata; and Grygier chose the Sonata by Roberto Sierra; all very difficult and challenging pieces.

Andrzej Grygier took home the $35,000 first prize in the first edition of the Baltimore International Guitar Competition which took place on September 20–25, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland.

"I remembered the words my mother used to say: ‘Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today.’ So I recorded it that night. I am glad I did because there is a uniform sound on the album from using the same guitar on every piece.” Read more about Berta Rojas and her latest album:

Berta Rojas' album Legado features 12 tracks composed by or written in homage to a pair of classical guitar pioneers: Ida Presti (1924–1967) of France and María Luisa Anido (1907–1996) of Argentina.
