My grandfather, Leonid Caplunov, was an Artist. Literally. At least some part of his life he was. Of course, apart from a bunch of other skills he possessed, he was a painter. For example, he was drawing some soviet propaganda billboards, you know, “Lenin lived, Lenin is alive, Lenin will live”, something like that. Also, he was made a memorial to Soviet soldiers, which was dying in WWII. He made a project, and later he made this monument by his hands. And also I have a painting that was drawn by my grandpa. It is an interesting story because my grandpa painted this painting something about 50 or 60 years ago, and he gave it to our relative, and after some time that painting was stolen from him. After decades someone from our relatives, accidentally saw this painting, when he or she was visiting in one house, and this man bought it back and gave it to my uncle from Ukraine, and he brought it to us. And now this painting is in my parent’s home.
As for my father, Alex Caplunov, he also has the talent of an Artist. Once, I found some old notebooks from my father’s youth. And I found there a lot of really talented drawings. And then one day, when I was a kid, he drew some an ancient Chinese monster head, and he wants to make a DIY 3D model of this head. He made a plasticine cast of this monster head, and then he made cardboard copies with a papier-mache technique. He even made DIY factory-style packages, and he tried to sell it, and I really can't remember if he sold any. It was times without Instagram, so, I think nowadays he could sell many of these Chinese monster heads.
I've really never been good at drawing, but I have a cool imagination. And one day I opened Blender, and I found that I can draw all I want, and I can create all I want just with my mouse. Without pencils and brushes, without paint, just with my mouse, just by moving some vertices. And it was a magnificent insight. Now I can use my imagination, to make all I can just imagine. And it turns out that a pencil isn't so scary, if a pencil is a pen from a drawing tablet, and if I use sculpting or texturing software. So now I went back to my roots, to my origins, and now I am an Artist too.
