Quintelium is the electronic/ambient project of Michael McWay, hailing from the Central Valley of California. So far his work ranges from the drone/ambient from his debut Memory Horizon (2022, on Kaiseiki Digital) to the more rhythmic Berlin School-inspired Kosmische of Moon Waves (2023, on Ephem-Aural).

His newest, Dream And Reality, out on Somewherecold Records, expands and deepens the drone excursions of his debut and explores the spiritual terrain of new age and the sound of Stars of the Lid. Dream and Reality uses the minimal aesthetics of drone and ambience to evoke a flowing, ever-changing reality, the one that we find ourselves in in every instant.

Quintelium: Dream and Reality will be released on CD and digital on August 30, 2024 on Somewherecold Records.

FOR IMMEDIATE PRE-ORDER – A Journey of Giraffes: Retro Porter Out June 7, 2024
Retro Porter is the lucky 7th album by A Journey of Giraffes for Somewherecold Records. Recorded in Barcelona and Baltimore, among other places, the album derives its inspiration from the architectural feats of Antoni Gaudi. Using Gaudi’s technique of trencadis- where cracked tile is rearranged and placed in a surreal yet somehow organized pattern- AJOG takes the fragments of sound and applies them in recursive formations. Motifs appear, dissolve, and reappear amidst other motifs undergoing the same process— familiarity escalates in tandem with unfamiliarity at a growing pace.
Retro Porter also draws its breath from the idea of the flaneur (see The Arcades Project by Walter Benjamin). As described elsewhere, the flaneur “sees the world through a kaleidoscope, finds solitude in a crowd, and delights in anonymity.”
In short, everything connects neatly in Retro Porter though the pieces might appear disparate and diffuse. The sounds of this album disorient and orient simultaneously. The sum of all your daydreams writ large.
A Journey of Giraffes: Retro Porter will be out on June 7, 2024 on dual CD and all digital formats. The album is limited to 25 copies, so if you want a physical copy, get it before the pre-orders run out.

Concussed's first release on Somewherecold Records, Precipice of the Void, garnered a spot on the Bandcamp New and Notable list when it was released as well as in the best of 2021 list from Igloo Magazine. The follow up, Electromagnetic Dust, was released in August 2022 and slipped a bit under the radar for most reviewers and blogs but garnered a lot of radio attention being played across the world. Now, Jim Branstetter, the mind behind the compositions, introduces us to the vastness of apocalyptic sci-fi soundscapes and brittle atmospheres once again proving that Concussed is a project worth hearing.

As such, Concussed's latest release on Somewherecold Records is a journey through dark atmospheric soundscapes. Pulling inspiration from the visionary works of William Gibson, Philip K. Dick, and James S.A. Corey, the fusion of Cyberpunk, Sci-Fi, and Cassette Futurism elements transport listeners to imagined near-future worlds. Using drones, tape machines, samples, and DIY electro-acoustic devices to add depth and complexity to the music, Hacktivist Satellite Transmissions invites listeners to explore and create their own narratives within the music's framework.

OUT NOW! John the Silent: War Variations (Somewherecold Records, 2023)

A largely overlooked artist, the minimalist, electronic artist John the Silent is back with a twenty plus minute EP called War Variations. Set solidly in the tradition of art as protest, John the Silent reflects sonically on the horrors of war, and current events in our current global crises.

“War Variations” was recorded live, in one take, in studio rehearsal for a one time live performance on April 2, 2022 at Healer in Indianapolis, IN. “War Variations” was invoked by the unlawful, immoral, and illegal invasion by Russia into the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Reflecting on the effect of all war on the physical, emotional, and spiritual lives of so many people, most of whom have no say in the waging, funding, or support of war, yet who bear the brunt of the suffering, not to mention the environmental and generational damage, John the Silent took elements of field recordings, drone textures, melodies, and traditional religious tonal themes from Ukraine to create a landscape that evokes feelings of pre-war normalcy, the moment of crisis and fleeing, and the hope of peace. John the Silent used obsolete ipads through an analog mixer to create these sounds and assemble the piece as a live performance captured on this recording.

John the Silent: War Variations is the fifth release on Somewherecold Records and was released on May 26, 2023. 20 physical copies on CD will be available through bandcamp as well as all digital formats.

OUT TODAY! Rivers of Glass: By the Light of Burning Bridges (Somewherecold, 2022)

It's a tale of two cities (yes i stole that): Paris and Las Vegas. Although the Eiffel Tower looms high in both, another commonality now arrives in the form of Rivers of Glass.

Rivers of Glass is Allan J Kimmel, mysterious loner troubadour of the Seine who performs as Departure Street, and Blake Edward Conley, the Kentucky Colonel of the telecaster extraordinaire who performs as droneroom. Both are known for their ability to render the cosmic earthen and the earth feel like the cosmos.

Their debut album is called By the Light of Burning Bridges -- the name derived from a largely unknown ceremony in which the inhabitants of a certain Norwegian isle set all bridges afire in order to prohibit entry while they enact what could only be described as a modern day saturalia. It finds Kimmel and Conley exploring the natural crossover of their styles in a fashion reminiscent of the guitar pairings of Loren Connors & Alan Licht, Thalia Zedek & Chris Brokaw, and Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed.

Their playing creates a cinematic latticework of sympathetic notes and sublime textures. At times bright and cheerful, at times dark and dissonant--often within the same composition--this is music for both the city and the desert. Rivers of Glass may set the bridges alight, but they know that same fire will guide you home.

OUT TODAY! The Corrupting Sea: Lungs Like Lead (Somewherecold Records, 2022)

The Corrupting Sea: Lungs Like Lead is the most difficult album I have ever made. It wasn’t because of the change in recording techniques or the change in textures associated with the album but rather with the subject matter. This album is about my mental disabilities, especially my struggles with PTSD caused by over a decade of trauma.

Further, the album packaging comes in a handmade book expertly put together by Simple Box Construction. It is hard back with cloth covering and the pages are sown into the cover. Each track has an image associated with it. The first page in the book has this statement:

“This album is dedicated to all who suffer from mental difficulties, disorders, or whatever adjective one might give the struggles many of us work through daily. This is a very personal album. I suffer from PTSD, depression, and social anxiety disorder and, unlike many others in the population, I process sensory data in ways others don’t. As I recorded this album, I tried to be as open as I could with my disabilities, taking the lines of a poem I wrote in 2013 as the title for each track and attempted to transform them into a sonic story telling of the struggle. What I want to say is stay strong and, even when your lungs feel like lead, breath. You are loved and the world needs you. I struggle alongside you.”

The poem was written while I was teaching a course far from home and having a mental break down far away from any of my support systems. Lungs Like Lead represents so much of what has happened to me, the struggles to find a path to health which have eluded me, and the process of coming to terms with my very real disabilities. As someone who fights his own brain to stay alive on a constant basis, Lungs Like Lead is a sonic vision into my struggle as well as a means to communicate with others like me so they don’t seem like they are alone.

OUT TODAY! Concussed: Electromagnetic Dust (Somewherecold Records, 2022)

Out today, sound and moving image artist Jim Branstetter releases a second full length album, Electromagnetic Dust, on Somewherecold Records under the project name Concussed.

The album, Electromagnetic Dust was produced and recorded during the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022 during the recovery from lockdown of the Covid 19 Pandemic. "I tend to think visually when coming up with ideas for tracks", Branstetter explains. Branstetter produced each track as a vignette of emotional reaction to what was happening on the world stage as well as his personal life, like a sonic journal of sorts.

Branstetter's, previously released album Precipice of the Void was highly praised, and featured on Igloo Magazine’s Best of 2021 list as well as appearing on Bandcamp's new and notable releases in 2021.

OUT TODAY! Shepherd Stevenson: Man Down (Somewherecold Records, 2022)

Shepherd Stevenson is a musician, film composer and actor from Los Angeles, CA. He is a founding member and bass player of the notorious L.A. rock band Pigmy Love Circus. Prior to the Pigmys, he played guitar and sang in the noted Denver Colorado 80’s bands The Aviators, The Young Weasals, and Crankcall Loveaffair. Recent film composing projects include award winning indie films Erasing Eden, Doobious Sources, and Mermaid Down.

This is his first solo record. The music for this album was written as accompaniment for the art installation “Deep Map” by Annie Sperling and Mason Rothschild which was projected on the U.S.S. Iowa in Long Beach, CA and benefited Alta Sea’s Project Blue, a digital port for content and education resources for the emerging Blue Economy.

Austin, Texas-based My Education formed in 1999 and have released eight full-length albums. The band's last album, Schiphol, was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead, Patty Griffin etc.) at Public HiFi studios in Austin.

The band is currently in the final phases of preparing their new LP “Emka” for release on somewherecold records. It is a trans-hemispheral collaboration that culminated in a week of ecstatic sessions at the famed Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, TX with Charles Godfrey (Swans, Trail of Dead, etc.).

Emka reflects the terrors of living in a world shaped by the last world war and the cold war that followed it.

My Education regularly tours the US and did 19 shows in 20 days in Europe in 2013. They have shared the stage with A Place to Bury Strangers, Kinski, Bardo Pond, Dalek, The Black Angels, The Sea and Cake, Warpaint, Alexander Hacke/Algis Kizys duo, the Psychedelic Furs, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, This Will Destroy You, Sleepy Sun, White Denim and too many others to name here. North Americans will soon see them on tour with Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso UFO in 2023.

Great Moon Essence was composed and recorded alone at Brandon Blair‘s, Aura Gaze, home studio on some dark and cold nights in late winter of ’22. The concept of Yin/Yang often came to mind. Blair’s intentions are to bring a calming meditative zone to the listener reminiscent of watching the sun rise. He used the benefit of having plenty of studio time and no deadlines to experiment with Indian tunings and scales, and even attached small wires to cymbals to get unique percussion sounds.

This work is highly influenced by Carlos Nino & Friends, Jonathan Goldman, and Kirtan (devotional songs).
