Do you know what I find ironic about digital marketing agencies?
We are experts at giving advice to our clients’ business strategies…
And yet…
I know some digital marketing agencies who don’t set their own goals.
So, if I ask them where they are currently at in their action plan…
They are clueless and don’t know what to answer.
You see, you must be serious about setting your agency’s goals.
Because without it, you can’t formulate a specific plan of action.
And without a plan of action…
You won’t have an idea on what the right pace is appropriate in your business.
Furthermore, without specific targets, you can’t maximize your income potential.
And that equates to millions of missed opportunities to earn more.
So, if you want to maximize your agency’s potential, set your goals.
And here’s what you should be thinking about when setting your goals:

#1 Sales growth
Of course, revenue increase should be part of your growth strategy.
Without growth in revenue, you won’t have cash to scale your company…
Or hire different talents.
So, how do you grow your sales?
There are different approaches to this.
You can aim to acquire more clients…
Upsell your services to your existing clients…
Or add variety to your products.
For example, if you’re mainly focused on content marketing…
You can learn how to create websites and landing pages…
And add them to your existing catalogue.

#2 Exposure
You know, the essence of what we do as digital marketers…
If you narrow it down…
Is all about getting exposure to our clients.
Thus, it’s only proper to aim for more exposure to your business as well.
Because more exposure could equate to more leads.
And more leads may result in more clients.
So, pay attention to your social media platforms…
And start producing your own content to shine a light on your company.

#3 Engagement
You are the face of your digital marketing agency.
And you can be the best person to represent it.
Engagement or dialogue are the best way to showcase your expertise as a marketer.
Conduct free webinars and invite people from different industries.
Have a one-on-one dialogue and help them address the problems they currently have.
Through this effort, you can show mastery in different fields of digital marketing.
And these participants may be your next client.

#4 Save
Digital marketing is a seriously lucrative industry.
If you’re consistently hitting your target sales…
This isn’t a reason for you to splurge your money.
Instead, reinvest them into your agency.
Conduct training, purchase software, or hire more high-level experts.
Digital marketing agencies are perhaps one of the most crisis-proof businesses I know.
Because we can cater to clients from across the world…
We are practically invulnerable to whatever crisis that may come.
But this doesn’t mean that there’s no risk.

Let’s talk about a situation that all agency owners have probably experienced.
It’s crucial to address it because it could either make or break your business.
I’m talking about losing motivation.
As you know, maintaining your self-motivation is easier said than done.
And if you succumb to the lack of it…
The results can leave you at a disadvantage.
Plus, it can trigger a domino effect that could impact even your employees and clients.
To address this…
Let me share with you three tools that you can use to get out of a slump:

Tool #1: Goals
I know that when you start your agency, you have your goals in mind.
But sometimes, we make the mistake of setting too big a goal.
And in times of overwhelm, this becomes a hindrance.
Because when you set a goal that is too high…
You can get easily stressed out, especially if you’ve only got a few people behind your back.
So, here’s my advice:
Set smaller goals underneath that ultimate goal.
Then, focus on achieving those smaller milestones first.

Tool #2: Accountability
Here’s the thing…
When you’re not motivated to work for your agency, nothing will happen.
That’s why you need to hold yourself accountable.
Now, accountability, for me, is the perfect antidote to a lack of motivation.
Because when you realize that tasks, your people, and your clients all rely on you…
You’ll push yourself to do the right thing…
Which is to get up and work.

Tool #3: Reflection
Taking the time to reflect is crucial in running an agency.
So, go somewhere quiet or where you find calmness.
It doesn’t have to be somewhere expensive.
As long as you get to reflect on things that happened, you’re good.

Here’s another thing…
Contrary to what motivational speakers say…
Working 7 days a week won’t take you to success.
These are three effective tools that you can use when you’re going through a slump.
Remember, cut yourself some slack…
Trust yourself…
And trust the process.

There are those that don’t know what they’re talking about…
Those that are copied from other authoritative sites…
And of course, there is authoritative content that truly helps.
But the question is…
If truly helpful SEO guides exist…
Why can’t we all succeed in SEO?
I think I know why…
That’s because most of the time…
These guides are so technical that novices can’t understand them.
And more importantly…
They always leave people hanging.
So after reading the guides, you’d still have this one question in mind:
“What’s next?”
And that’s how new agencies fail to rank their clients.
Which results in their clients losing trust in SEO agencies.
But you are a different breed.
And after I share with you these 3 things no one talks about SEO…
You can provide even more value to your clients.
So without saying anything further, here are those 3 things:

#1 Persistence
You see, succeeding in SEO is like running a marathon.
Not a sprint.
So it means playing the long game.
You can’t have overnight success in SEO.
In fact, it can actually take a couple months to see noticeable improvements.
But if you’re on the right track…
And doing all the right things…
SEO will be fruitful in the long run.
#2 Ex*****on
Nothing beats ex*****on.
You can be persistent and motivated…
But if you don’t know what you’re doing…
You won’t get any results.
So, it’s important to have a deep understanding of SEO if you want results.
Because in SEO, it’s not just about optimization.
It’s a collective effort of synchronizing your on-page and off-page efforts…
And making them work in unison to achieve your goal of ranking your client’s business.

#3 Repetition
Lastly, you must be willing to circle back over and over again to find a keyword…
Or a piece of content that works.
Sometimes, even SEO experts make mistakes.
So, it’s like trial and error…
And a continuous pursuit of looking for what works.
Thus, you must be patient.
And if you find an SEO strategy that works…
Keep up the effort and repeat.
You see, there is no magic button for SEO.
It still takes good strategy, quality content and great ex*****on…

We all know that an SEO campaign has the main point.
To be found.
But the problem is that most agencies focus too much on this single goal that…
They develop tunnel vision.
And that makes all their efforts work against them.
You see, SEO is not just all about finding the right keywords.
In fact, keywords are just a tiny element of SEO.
So if you focus too much on keyword research…
You could be wasting your time.
Because there are three other things that you should know about SEO.
These are:

#1 Authority
Domain authority is an indication of a domain’s ability to rank in the SERPs.
And building domain authority doesn’t happen in a snap of a finger.
It requires time because the age of a website is important for Google.
And then, there’s popularity.
Google uses two metrics to measure how popular a site is:
Firstly, there’s quantity.
Simply put, more backlinks to your site gives you more authority.
But don’t be too sneaky as Google knows if a link comes from a link-mill website.
Secondly, there’s the quality of the backlinks.
This means that Google puts more weight on a website that gets backlinks from authoritative sites…
Compared to one that gets backlinks from newer sites.
In essence, Google puts quality first, and quantity second.

#2 Quality
Building an authoritative website isn’t possible without creating high-quality content.
High quality content provides real answers to people.
And it provides value to the niche and people it targets.
And if you noticed, I did not mention keywords.
Because quality is the main focus.
Keywords only come after that.

#3 Signals
Lastly, there’s signals.
These are things that provide Google with context in regards to your website.
Signals come from Google Reviews, Maps, Google My Business, social media and more.
That’s why these things are also important.
But keep this in mind…
Signals come last because Authority and Quality must be your priority.
So if you’ve got authority and quality…
And you’ve nailed your website’s ex*****ons…
It’s really just a matter of generating more signals…
To keep building more authority to push your website further higher the SERP ranking.
So, if you’ve got an SEO campaign that you think is properly executed but kind of lacks results…
It’s probably caused by a deficiency in one of these three things.
So before you scratch your head and think that your SEO campaign is a blunder…
Look into these and you might find the answer.

Some SEO experts focus too much on keywords…
And some focus too much on how to rank a website…
In short, they are mostly preoccupied by how Google’s algorithm works.
But did you know that Google doesn’t just have an algorithm?
It also has a “principle” on how pages and content should be made in order to rank.
And this principle is what most SEO experts don’t get right.
It’s called…
Expertise
Authority
Trustworthiness
Or simply, the E-A-T principle.
Although it has been long debated if E-A-T is a ranking factor…
Google itself says that it’s “very important”.
E-A-T is one of the numerous guidelines Google uses to identify if…
The content is high quality and value to the readers.
And when Google finds it valuable, it will give the content a better rank on the search results.
To quote Google:
"High Quality Pages has “High level of Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.”
So, how do we demonstrate E-A-T in our content?
First of all, when a quality rater rates a page, they are tasked with 3 main things:
Judge the quality of the web pages
Make sure mobile results are helpful
Look for the overall reputation of the author and entity
So, if you look closely…
Google E-A-T has its roots in AUTHORSHIP.
So, the author of the article should be connected to the entity that you’re trying to rank for the relevant keywords.
And most importantly, the author must be a person.
You cannot fire off an authorship schema without being tied to a person.
Aside from that…
There are also some things that you can do to improve your website’s E-A-T:
#1 Tell your visitors who you are
You can do this by simply adding an About Us page highlighting the experience and expertise of the people behind your company.

#2 Hire experts to create content
Although there are great ghostwriters out there who can write about almost any topic…
Google still wants and prefers content created by subject-matter experts.

#3 Be clear about your content’s purpose

Use a title and heading tags to make clear what you’re talking about in your content.
And don’t write long-form content just for the sake of it.
Sometimes, short is sweeter. So be concise.

#4 Keep your content up to date
The amount of content created every day is staggering.
Because of that, content becomes outdated really fast.
So keep in mind that you update your facts, and stats to keep up with the changes.

#5 Link to other authoritative and high-quality sources
When including backlinks in your content…
Make sure that you link to authoritative sites and are high-quality.
This will help your website establish authority.
Google’s E-A-T principle is truly puzzling up until this day.
