Having 2 children with special needs is mentally {and physically} exhausting unlike anything I could’ve imagined. The appointments, plans, therapies, schedules, what ifs/how are we going to do this - encompass all of my thoughts everyday.
BUT
these two - the love they have for each other is quite possibly the sweetest thing, and better than anything I could’ve imagined.

As part of Miniland’s campaign, Innovators in Inclusion, I’m answering three questions to bring awareness to inclusion.
*Let’s talk about diversity and inclusion, why is it important to you?*
EDUCATION! Diversity and inclusion are so important to me because of the education it provides. I didn’t know anyone with Down Syndrome prior to Poppy’s birth. And had I taken the time to educate myself, I wouldn’t have been so scared when we received her diagnosis. My
mindset would have been different, and her diagnosis wouldn’t have been so scary.
Diversity and inclusion are important because it allows differences to coexist in a way that’s mutually beneficial to everyone. Interacting with others who are different from you only broadens your own mindset.
And that’s why I love @minilandusa – they create dolls that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
While I love the fact that @minilandusa allows Poppy the opportunity to see her own special traits in the dolls that she plays with, I think it’s a wonderful it also exposes her and other children to a wide spectrum of diverse dolls, including dolls with Down Syndrome, hearing
implants, and vitiligo.

Every year around Poppy’s birthday, the same picture pops up on my Memories. I can see in this picture that I had just received her diagnosis and was trying to process my own feelings and how to share it with others.
Please know, I was not ashamed of her. I just was trying to sort through my feelings. And I can see that through the pictures I shared. None of them “looked like she had Down Syndrome”. Whether or not that was intentional, I wasn’t ready to talk about it or share it with the world. And I know I needed that time to process. And I relive all of that this time of year around her birthday.
But my how that has changed. I can’t shout enough how lucky I am. I see the pictures I never posted nor shared, and how much of my beautiful girl I see.
And I share this in hopes that it reaches someone who is in that same spot that I was. Those conflicted emotions of scared of the diagnosis but loving your child fiercely.
Because now I consider myself so incredibly lucky to be gifted with the blessing of having a child with Down Syndrome. I truly am the lucky few. 🤍
