Day 5 of Urbana’s 7 Days of Action Campaign!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

Today, on Day 5 of our 7 Days of Action campaign, we have featured two beach clean ups as our actions. We want to stress the significance of preserving and sustaining Earth for future generations. Climate change is real and Earth needs you! Even you can start making a change by raising awareness about climate issues through online campaigns, workshops, and using poetry as activism.

We also want to highlight the amazing work of Lauren Tufur. Through her poem “Ocean’s 1,” Tufur conveys the ignorance of the human being to take for granted all the natural resources that nature offers us for free and how man itself is responsible for misusing them.

Day 5 officially starts now!🤩

Get ready and attend these two clean-up 🧹 events that are currently taking place in the city of Miami 🌇. Help your planet 🌍 and your community by offering your hand. Make a change!

To finalize Day - 4 Decode Surveillance NYC for Amnesty International, Urbana is sharing “Another Prey,” an art created by our talented member Adriana Alonso. .al_3

This art displays the fear and oppression that many immigrants and refugees face under surveillance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

These individuals don't have the privilege to defend and express themselves; their human rights are being brutally violated.

We invite you to stand for those immigrants. Their rights matter and we need to fight for them!

We are inviting you to help Amnesty Decoders to research facial recognition technology🤩.

What will you do?
“As a volunteer, you will be shown a Google Street View image of a New York City intersection. They will ask you to study the image. If you see any CCTV cameras they will ask you to tag them and tell them what they are attached to—for example, traffic signals or streetlights.” Amnesty Decoders

DAY - 4 "Free People From ICE Detention" starts now!!!

For many immigrants and refugees who are locked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), their human rights are constantly violated in the detention centers. They are not even treated with adequate medical care. They are held for days, months, and even years in crowded small cells. Sometimes they don’t even have access to soap neither allow to take a shower.

Urbana is encouraging you to take action in regards to this matter! As shown in the picture, sign the petition and send two letters, one to Director Tony Pham and an opinion-ed to our Editors-in-Chief letting us know you took this action.

For any questions, DM us.

DAY 3 - PRIDE OVER PREJUDICE STARTS NOW ✨

“Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.”
Brad Henry.

No matter where you are from, every society must respect immigrants families 👥 and provide the same resources and support they give to others. Urbana proudly embraces under its wings🤲, numerous students from immigrants families. All of them have been the most important pillars for our magazine and its growth💪.

For today’s campaign, Urbana is sharing with all of you, “My Peace,” a poem written by Joi Axem. This piece is focused on how inexcusably black communities suffer in hands of police officers.

Racism, the belief that individuals should be separated into exclusive biological entities most know as “races,” has been an issue throughout this country’s history. The African American community has been unfairly discriminated against by others and we have to stop it 🔴.

Today Urbana invites you to continue fighting for EQUALITY🤝, JUSTICE, FREEDOM, and to stand against racism!

As DAY 2 reflects, you can still actively participate in events and initiatives in your community that aim to support black-owned businesses and amplify Black stories. Don’t stop fighting for this cause since the world needs students and people like you if we want to end these injustices!

DAY 2 - DISRUPT RACISM STARTS NOW💪

The recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, among others, have demonstrated the injustices and cruelty that many Black Americans face at the hands of the police.

We’ve seen how our people through protests, tweets, FB, and IG posts spoke📢 out their deepest emotions and showed the causes for which we were fighting for, EQUALITY, JUSTICE⚖️, and the ending of white supremacy❌.

We stand against racism!

DAY 2 ✨brings you an opportunity to be connected to your community to speak about these issues that are considerably affecting our people. You will be able to have a conversation about how to actively be anti-racist and disrupt racism in your communities🤝.

Urbana has started its 7-Days of Action Campaign with Virtual Readings with FNE International, an activity in which Miami Dade College students read excerpts from "The Little Prince" 🤴to a group of Nicaraguan students at the Ricardo Streb Biblioteca in Chacraseca🇳🇮.

Today, we seek to emphasize the importance of art and storytelling in early education📝, since this exposure benefits the development of creativity and self-esteem, among other things.

We also want to highlight the intersectionality of art and changemaking. With her piece, Maria Mejicano has captured Nicaraguan children reading at the library. What an amazing feeling to be able to connect with children in Central America through the power of story!

Hi Urbanites,
This week we are back with a new blog piece created by our talented member Gabriela Garcia! 💕

In “Eighteen Years of Injustices Experienced as a Girl,” Gabriela exposes how throughout the years she has been affected by gender inequality. She shares with all of us her own opinion on how women should be equally treated in all societies🤝.

“...we need to advocate for change and incentivize women to feel free to perform the same actions men do.”
