This week we feature the remix of Soul Campbell’s ‘Universum’ which was released this month on the label.

A few words from the man himself: “I love the original and I wanted to make something that was true to that sound but added my own Air Jackson twist. I used many of the original sounds and patterns and ran them through my various machines and VSTs to output something that was slightly heavier, bassier and spacier. I love how this one turned out and I’m really looking forward to being able to play it for some crowds very soon!”

Meet our artist Drew, a very talented producer & DJ from Greystones, Wicklow who also goes by the name ‘Soul Campbell’. Drew, has been a key player on the local Dublin scene for the last decade. Besides regular sets at clubs like O***m, Hangar and Pygmalion, he also makes frequent festival appearances showing off his deep appreciation for everything from 80s pop to techno, disco to electro.

His latest release on Ten One Records, ‘Universum’ was written during a harsh Irish lockdown and references contemporary artists like Palms Trax and The Blessed Madonna while throwing back to a time when Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers were lighting up the charts. The single also marks ten years of Campbell's immersion in the dance world.

The superb 'Universum' is designed for dance, disco, and pop lovers and will bring good times to any set. It has big, skyward arps that bring light and cosmic dazzle. There are airy vocals and a chugging groove with plenty of nostalgic cowbells and imaginative studio effects that make it shine.

released Alchemist Series 0.2. She's a scorcher of a mix.

'I really enjoyed building this months' edition of the Alchemist Mix Series. When digging for music I was also trying to find music for another, much funkier mix and by way of counterbalancing I felt a strong draw towards slightly heavier stuff that I love but perhaps wouldn't always get the opportunity to play at clubs & festivals in Ireland. In fact, I think this is what the Alchemist Mix Series is already becoming for me - an opportunity to play music with a freedom that I don't always have.

This edition took me down a very enjoyable rabbit hole of garage, breakbeat, dubstep & techno. As always, the music is all brand new and the focus of this mix series is unearthing talent from across the globe, many of whom I have never heard of before landing upon their bandcamp pages or promo emails. Yet again, I was utterly impressed with the amount of top quality music being released each and every single week - I don't think electronic music has ever been stronger than it is right now.

I also have a very special mix coming soon for a very special radio station on a very VERY special white isle..... keep your 👀 peeled'

Track ID: Hover || Produse || Hover EP || TENONE007

Not only is Produse one of the best studio engineers that we know, his attention to detail while making music is next level.

Here he discusses some of the details that went into making the title track from his Hover EP;

"This track went through many versions before settling on the released one. The longest part of making this track was getting the marriage between the kick and bass working. I designed the kick on Sonic Academy’s Kick 2 plugin, so I was able to dial in the key and phase just right to sit it with the bassline, which I think worked out well. Both are heavy but they fit together. It’s what I went back to many times during the track creation to tweak and fix.

The big, distorted riser that hits after the break is what is the highlight of the track for me. The space just before the drop is what gives it so much impact. This also didn’t work without a decent level of distortion on it. It was again a fine balance of too much/little before I think I got it right.

The track is full of short hits and stabs. I try to use as little synths as possible and just use automation to change the sounds throughout which can keep some consistency, too many synth sounds can at times have a negative effect on the track.
Out of the four tracks on the EP this one took the longest to make. The other 3 took just a few days each but this one I laboured over for weeks, finally getting there in the end.

The images used in this video are a handful of Dublin's iconic electronic venues that have perished over the past 2 decades. This is ironic given the talent pool and output from Irish electronic musicians has never been stronger. Give Us The Night need to be supported and praised for their tireless dedication to bringing these cultural shortcomings to the forefront of public & government thinking and future planning (feat. Temple Theatre, Tivoli Theatre, Redbox, Mc Gruders & The Bernard Shaw).

Track ID: Epidey || Produse || Hover EP || TENONE007

We caught up with the man himself Produse to find out how this powerful track came together: "The Moog Subsequent37 did majority of the sounds on this track. The main arp is a square and sine wave mix with a lot of processing on it to give it that knocking sound. The Arp is running over a three-note chord which takes it out of the 4-bar pattern and releases it into its own separate repetition…very affective to keep it from tiring out too fast. A few happy accidents made some nice little additions. Fat fingers caused me to deactivate the arp at an unexpected time while playing it, but it ended up adding more to the track reducing the predictability of the pattern a little.

The track has two main melodies, the pluck melody is again the Sub37 and also the softer melody on the breaks coming from the VirusTI2. The track and melodies are all in the G # diminished scale giving it that slightly sinister feel to it……. well that was the intention anyway."

From childhood I grew a deep appreciation for music of all kinds; classical, pop, rap & rock however quite early in my early teenage years I felt a very strong and unshakeable connection to electronic music. Track: The MFA - The Difference It Makes - Found in ‘The Alchemist’ playlist

"I first came across this track in 2003 when I was 19 years of age and used to go clubbing at least 3 times a week. I heard it first as the opener to James Holden's timeless 'Balance 005 Mix'. At a time when Trance & Techno were dominating the club scene it remarkably refreshing to hear the sound that was being pushed by Border Community and it's affiliates, sounds that were a bit more considered, atmospheric & deep. At the time this kind of sound was only really featuring in the smaller venues and parties but began to gain some real momentum throughout the mid to late 00's. I was (and still am) a huge fan of the label and to this day I regularly play tracks from the likes of James Holden, Petter, Nathan Fake & Extrawelt - so much excellent music that for my mind, was way ahead of it's time when we see how true their sound is still holding to the current day”

Another one from 'The Beekeeper's' EP \\ released last week.

“I composed this track mid-pandemic in a remote artist retreat on the west coast of Ireland. I had locked myself away for a week with no distractions other than my studio equipment and this EP was predominantly produced there. The first part of the track ‘Hibernia’ the ascending ARP & Bassline were played & recorded live in a single take, forming the backbone of the track. The rest of the elements were layered on afterwards piece by piece. The main vocal towards the end of the track is Lata Mangeshkar and has previously featured in the 1973 Bollywood movie ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’. The name ‘Hibernia’ is the name that the Romans gave to Ireland when deciding never to conquer it, Hibernia meaning ‘the land of eternal winter’ - perhaps offering some insight into my frame of mind at the time of recording.”
