51 years ago today, The Choate News published a supplement calling for the celebration of Earth Day and awareness of our impact on the earth. The momentum of the first Earth Day and the hard work of young people across the country led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Environmental Education Act, the Clear Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The supplement above is a reminder of the impact young people can have on policy. As the title of the editorial reminds us, “It’s up to us” to save the planet.

With the recent tragedy of the 2021 Atlanta Spa Shootings—another violent event that has ensued as a result of the rise of anti-AAPI hate sweeping the nation—Wesley ‘22 argues that in order to combat racially motivated domestic terrorism and the subsequent Asian-American hostility, policy change is necessary. Throughout the pandemic, people’s stance on how seriously to take public health precautions was written all over their face. Literally. Did they wear a mask alone in the car? Or were they maskless at parties come July, 2020? As the world turns its focus toward post-pandemic living, Sydney Alleyne ’23 urges people to continue to keep mutual health and safety at the front of their minds. It’s the question asked during orientation, on applications, at dining hall tables: “Where are you from?” From many of us, the answer to this question is routine. But for Charlotte Weinstein ’22, the answer is a little more complicated. Weinstein was born and raised in Bermuda, but has an American passport. In Bermuda, she’s “the American.” At Choate, she’s “the Bermuda girl.” Grab a copy of The Choate News to read more about how Charlotte ’22 has grappled with her national identity. As the Black Lives Matter movement sweeps the globe, many institutions are checking the structures of inequality plaguing their systems and making improvements. Choate is no exception. In an age of tremendous growth on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion front, Adrienne Chacón explores how Choate’s own systems and initiatives have changed in the past few years.
