Sirens have been a theme in my work for well over three years. In this update to a previous blog, a mirror was incorporated as planned in the artwork. This permits the viewer to connect with the Siren labeled in gold. The equations describing the attraction of the viewer to the Siren is placed on the rear of the glass of the frame. Let us consider the muse in pre-modern art. In previous blogs we have addressed; the succubi and incubus in art, the siren and piren, the mermaid and mermen and the pr******te in art. This blog continues that approach. The use of the muse in contemporary art will be considered in the next blog. From Sirens and Pirens, we move on to their surrogates, the pr******tes. Muses will be considered in a future blog. Both pr******tes and muses have been and are still subjects for the visual artist. When society requires a more realistic substitute for the succubus, incubus, siren or piren, they often substitute the pr******te. As suggested in the previous blog ‘Forgotten Women in Art History’ there were women prodigies and woman geniuses in all categories of study. They were often neglected in the history of man. Intelligence is gender neutral. Early Greeks and Romans recognized and recorded the ability of women, but mostly in poetry and on occasions in philosophy, medicine, music and history. Symbols in art Vodou like many religions invoke the spirit to address circumstances occurring beyond our comprehension. Figure B-1 is a painting by the Haitian artist, Hector Hyppolite. Hector Hyppolitee (1894-1948) used symbols for spirits in many of his paintings. Hyppolite was a third generation vodou priest, or houngan.
