This blog is a re-visit of the earlier blog on forbidden art. It is short as I am not blogging from my normal computer site. While re-exploring what is meant by forbidden art, it was necessary to ask the question of what is Art? A dictionary definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Sirens have been a theme in my work for well over three years. In this update to a previous blog, a mirror was incorporated as planned in the artwork. This permits the viewer to connect with the Siren labeled in gold. The equations describing the attraction of the viewer to the Siren is placed on the rear of the glass of the frame. As defined in the previous blog, the muse is a person who is the source of creative inspiration for artists. Artists are attracted to some special quality that they alone may notice. In both the female artist and male artist, these traits often spark creativity, imagination, inspiration and often leads to obsession. In Greek mythology the muses are goddesses. The muses used in the artwork for this blog are not Greek goddesses but are viewed as… [ 1,291 more word ]

Let us consider the muse in pre-modern art. In previous blogs we have addressed; the succubi and incubus in art, the siren and piren, the mermaid and mermen and the pr******te in art. This blog continues that approach. The use of the muse in contemporary art will be considered in the next blog. A few examples of the use of the muse in contemporary art are included in this blog for the purpose of contrasting them with those from pre-modern examples. [ 969 more words ]

From Sirens and Pirens, we move on to their surrogates, the pr******tes. Muses will be considered in a future blog. Both pr******tes and muses have been and are still subjects for the visual artist. When society requires a more realistic substitute for the succubus, incubus, siren or piren, they often substitute the pr******te. In the earliest stages of Luce Irigaray’s work, her principal investigation may have been on prostitution, but the real subjects of her study were male artists and the relationship to the women models used in their art. The thought process and construction process leading to artworks are often unstated or understated. The understanding of the purpose and meaning of an art piece is often left up to the art critic or a curator. To avoid a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the art piece, #1-94 Homage to Women referenced in this blog, the process of making the piece and the thoughts leading up to the making are detailed. As suggested in the previous blog ‘Forgotten Women in Art History’ there were women prodigies and woman geniuses in all categories of study. They were often neglected in the history of man. Intelligence is gender neutral. Early Greeks and Romans recognized and recorded the ability of women, but mostly in poetry and on occasions in philosophy, medicine, music and history. Neglected women are a source of inspiration for artists of all genders. [ 1,701 more word ]

This blog addresses mermaids and mermen in the visual arts. In an earlier blog we discussed the morphing of the incubus and succubus into the Piren (my term) and Siren. Male Sirens or Pirens did exist in ancient times. The Siren and Piren further morphed into mermaids and mermen that morphed into the pr******te and muse. Incubus An incubus is a mythological male night spirit who lies upon sleeping women in order to engage in sexual activity with them. As noted in an earlier blog, the female counterpart of the incubus is a succubus who takes the form of a woman in order to seduce men, also through sexual activity. Salacious tales of incubi and succubi have been told for many centuries in most cultures. [ 500 more words ]

We start with a question. Is knowledge of the background of an artist necessary to understanding and appreciating his or her work? The ongoing art exhibit at the Tate and an article on Van Gogh seems to think it is. But it can be fun and self-educational to go into a group art show, look and react to the work without knowing who executed the works. [ 1,591 more word ]

Symbols in art Vodou like many religions invoke the spirit to address circumstances occurring beyond our comprehension. Figure B-1 is a painting by the Haitian artist, Hector Hyppolite. Hector Hyppolitee (1894-1948) used symbols for spirits in many of his paintings. Hyppolite was a third generation vodou priest, or houngan. If you remember in an earlier blog "Shadows and Symbols", we alluded to symbols used for a Vodou goddess. [ 610 more words ]
