Joanne Shaw Taylor, discovered at 16 by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, quickly ascended as one of the world's leading rock guitarists. Championed by legends like Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, and Joe Bonamassa, her powerful songwriting and distinct vocals first captivated audiences with her 2009 debut, White Sugar. Over the years, Joanne has released numerous acclaimed albums, including the UK Top 20 hit Reckless Heart and the #1 Billboard Blues Chart toppers The Blues Album and Blues From The Heart Live. Her most recent studio album, Heavy Soul, launched under Bonamassa’s Journeyman Records earlier this year.
She is on tour until the end of the year - if you are in the Los Angeles area, you can catch her at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center in November.

On this day in 1994- release their debut album, Definitely Maybe. The record goes on to sell over a million copies in the US, spearheading a second British Invasion, but for now the band remain unknown outside of the UK.

Oasis offer a refreshing alternative to the current rock zeitgeist. Unlike many in the grunge movement, they want to be stars – and unlike most other British bands at the time, they are proud of their heritage and shamelessly borrow ideas (and sometimes whole melodies) from bands like The Beatles, The Kinks and T-Rex.

Definitely Maybe is low on production value and high on passion. With tracks like “Live Forever” and “Slide Away,” songwriter Noel Gallagher has created positive anthems that surf the crest of a new wave of political optimism in the UK. His cocksure brother Liam spits out his lines like a cross between Johnny Rotten and John Lennon.

The following year, Oasis release (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and become the biggest British band in the world. Definitely Maybe is merely the launch of their manifesto.

On this day in 1990 - Sinéad O’Connor refuses to perform at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey until they agree not to play the US national anthem before the show.

The venue has a policy of playing “The Star Spangled Banner” before every event, but O’Connor has a policy of not having any national anthems played before her concerts, as they “have nothing to do with music in general.”

The venue accommodates and the show goes on, but an uproar ensues. Some radio stations ban her songs; a New York state senator suggests a boycott of her upcoming concert. There’s even an incident in a Beverly Hills grocery store when a meat department worker spots her shopping and starts singing the national anthem (he is fired).

O’Connor doubles down on the controversy and begins offering more noble explanations for why she won’t allow the anthem. At various times, she says it’s a protest of overwrought patriotism, of music censorship, and of racism.

The incident becomes a springboard for O’Connor’s dive into disruption, culminating in her 1992 Saturday Night Live performance where she tears up a picture of Pope John Paul II.

Let’s remember all the great live shows from this band… Retires From Touring, Says Frontman Steven Tyler’s ‘Full Recovery From Vocal Injury Is Not Possible’
“We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side,” the band’s statement read Aerosmith is officially retiring from touring after Steven Tyler’s vocal injury.

The “Walk This Way” band made the heartbreaking announcementon Friday, Aug. 2 — nearly one year after Tyler, 76, fractured his larynx during a September 2023 show.

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other.  He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the statement read.

On this day in 1980 split up after Glenn Frey and Don Felder go at it on stage.

The group wraps up their The Long Run tour with a benefit concert in Long Beach for California Senator Alan Cranston. Before the show, Felder and Frey exchange words, releasing years of pent-up tension that come to a head when they go on stage. During the show, they exchange threats, and when they finish up, Felder smashes his guitar and takes off. The show becomes known in Eagles lore as “Long Night at Wrong Beach.”

Frey quits the group, but their manager, Irving Azoff, doesn’t make an announcement in hopes they can patch things up. The announcement never comes, but when Frey and Henley release solo albums in 1982, it becomes clear the Eagles are grounded. The band doesn’t get back together until 1994 for their Hell Freezes Over album and tour, a wildly lucrative reunion.

On this day in 1987 - performs “Jailhouse Rock” at Wormwood Scrubs prison in London, England. He says it’s his “last good memory of the ‘80s.”

Before the show, Ozzy is treated to tea. During the course of his conversation with the tea maker, it is revealed that the man is in prison because he poisoned eight people to death. Ozzy shoots tea out of his nose and nearly throws his mug against the wall.

The Scrubs, a band composed of prison guards and prisoners alike, open for Ozzy. The bass player is the perpetrator of one of the biggest mass killings in British history, having burned 37 people to death in a Soho nightclub. The guitarist is in Wormwood for beating a drug dealer to death.

The Scrubs finish and Ozzy takes the stage with guitarist Zakk Wylde and bassist Bob Daisley for the first time. Both men become regular collaborators.

The smell of w**d is so heavy in the air that it reminds Ozzy of a “Jamaican wedding.” There is a bar outside the door serving drinks to some of the guards.

On this day in 1965 - Dylan plugs in! At the Newport Folk Festival, plays an electric set for the first time, horrifying folkies everywhere.

Dylan’s performances at the festival in 1963 and 1964 help make him a favorite among the folk music faithful. On this night, he is the headliner.

Dylan fans are expecting to hear him sing and strum his acoustic guitar to hits such as “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Blowin’ In The Wind.” They may sense they are in for something different when Dylan strolls onto the stage in black jeans, black boots, and black leather jacket. Their suspicions are confirmed when he plugs in a 3-tone Sunburst Fender Stratocaster.

Backed by members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Dylan declares, “I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more,” and launches into 16 minutes of hard-rocking electric blues. “Maggie’s Farm” is followed by “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Phantom Engineer,” and “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.” Dylan has gone electric.

On this day in 1969 - Blind Faith, a group comprised of , , Ginger Baker and Ric Grech, release their self-titled debut album in the United States.

The group is already on tour in the US, selling out arenas simply on reputation. The album is hastily assembled, closing with a 15-minute jam called “Do What You Like.” In America, no singles are released from the LP, but the songs “Can’t Find My Way Home” and “Presence Of The Lord” earn steady airplay, and on September 20, it reaches #1.

The cover is nothing exciting, just a photo of the band with the group name and lineup. The UK release in August has a far more controversial album cover: a photo of a topless 11-year-old girl. This cover appears in limited release in America.

The album is the last for the group, which splits up when they finish their tour. Clapton issues his first solo album in 1970, but his supergroup days aren’t over: later that year he forms Derek & the Dominos. Winwood reboots Traffic, the band he left to form Blind Faith.
