"The Mary Rose was a pretty important ship for its time. As Henry VIII’s favourite he made her the flagship of his fleet that he had carefully built up over 30ish years. Henry was an avid shipbuilder, so it probably comes as no surprise that over his reign Henry went from a fleet of 5 to an armada of 58 by his death in 1547. Feeling the pressure against the French and Scottish navies, Henry took great pride in his ‘Army by Sea’.
Built as a carrack warship for the Royal Navy, the Mary Rose had a length of 32 metres, and it may be surprising to learn that the Mary Rose served in several battles before her shock sinking in 1545. Built in 1510 she had a 34-year-long career before the Battle of Solent that saw her ultimate demise…"

‘The Avenue of the Sphinxes was a road built for a purpose. Believed to date back 5000 years, the avenue held all sorts of celebrations, feasts, special occasions, coronations, really anything that needed to happen between Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, the Avenue of the Sphinxes was there to accommodate.
But the main reason for the Avenue is believed to be the annual Opet Festival that would take place in Thebes, or the name Luxor went by in the ancient times. But we’ll get into the logistics of this fascinating festival in a little bit. First let’s find out the origins of this fascinating walkway…’

Today’s episode’s focus is an ice cave up high in the middle of a mountain that is part of the Austrian Alps. The locals believed it to be the entrance to hell or the entrance to the land of the Ice Giants, which for some are probably the same thing. Let’s head on in to find out what it has to offer. “Literally translating from the German, Eisrisenwelt, the name of this fascinating cave, is ‘World of the Ice Giants’, and to be honest that’s a pretty accurate description of the Eisriesenwelt cave, and it’s a cold cave as well, just how the Ice Giants like it.
You can find Eisriesenwelt near a small Austrian town that goes by the name of Werfen, which is about 25 km from Salzburg. And the cave is a great hidden treasure because it isn’t exactly easily accessible, located on Hochkogel mountain which sits within the Tennengebirge range at about 1641 metres above sea level, which is apart of a little mountain range commonly known as the Austrian Alps…”

Another lost underwater city for us to explore. Let’s dive right in and see what we can find.

‘You may be thinking ‘a city underwater? I bet some massive disaster was to blame, like Port Royal or Pompeii, and heaps of people died’. And normally you would probably be correct, but in this instance, my dear destination historian, it is not. Shi Cheng as it turns out was not a victim of nature, but a victim of humans.
The underwater city of Shi Cheng has actually turned out to be a brilliant time capsule of life during the times of Imperial China, and much like Port Royal and Pompeii, it can provide us with a great snapshot of the past.
Finding itself at the bottom of Qiandao Lake in the Zhejiang Province of China, Shi Cheng is actually so old that it dates to the Tang dynasty, all the way back in 621 AD, meaning that this city is about 1400 years old. Now that’s quite a long time to be sitting around, and what’s even crazier is that the city has only been underwater for about 50 years, so the place has done a great job in sticking around for so long…’

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is such a fascinating place, that one episode just wouldn’t do, it definitely needed two. So this first episode will explore how the place was built, how it was reconstructed after the French Revolution and what is pretty cool to look at on the inside.

"What’s interesting about churches is that they’re generally a collection of architectural styles, mainly because churches last forever and they need to be fixed, rebuilt, and changed to meet the needs of differing times. Which means that without even moving locations, a church can be built and continuously rebuilt and still be solid in its foundations. And that is what we see in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in the heart of Paris.
Now Notre Dame is quite possibly one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals you will come across, and to many a Parisian, it is more than an 850 year old landmark, it is actually the very heart of their city. Quite literally, right at the start the city that would become what we know as Paris today grew up around Notre Dame, which sits on an island in the middle of the River Seine..."
