ZEDF Raises US$25 million Funding to Support NTEs

The Zambia Export Development Fund (ZEDF), the leading non-traditional export finance entity for Zambian SMEs and firms has raised US$25 million in third party funding support from development finance funders, other funders and investors through its appointed fund-raising agent and strategic partner.

This funding support which raises the fund base from US$4 million to US$29 million will enable ZEDF expand its financing base, increasing the loan size and tenure, launch new financing capabilities and provide its customers with a broadened range of financing products. This is intended to provide affordable finance for SMEs, firms, women and youth which is a challenge for most, consequently hampers business growth and expansion.

Prior to this credit line, the fund primarily depended on the seed capital from the European Union (EU) while its operating cost were partly met by the Zambian government and through the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA).

The Funding line will support the mission to provide non-traditional exporters affordable and appropriate finance and make meaningful contribution to the growth of non-traditional exports, and job creation. In addition, the fund will be able to offer both working capital and expenditure finance.

ALL THE 3 BORDERS WITH DRC TEMPORARILY CLOSED.

Government has temporarily closed all the three borders to the Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC- on the Copperbelt.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA says the development is aimed at protecting the country's property and human life, owing to the protests taking place in the DRC.

Mr. MULENGA says the last ten days have seen protests in the neighbouring country following the ban of imports in lime and beverages into that country.

He has told ZNBC News in Kasama that the Zambian government will engage authorities in DRC on the possibility of resolving the matter.

Mr. MULENGA has called for patience among drivers and the Zambian people on the traffic that may start to build up as a result of the development.

He said Kasumbalesa, Mokambo and Sakania borders will remain closed until the matter is resolved.

UPDATE ON LUANGWA BRIDGE REPAIR WORKS IN CHAMA DISTRICT

Following the washaway of an approach embankment to Luangwa Bridge on January 27, 2024 due to flash floods experienced in the area, the Chama-Matumbo Road was cut-off completely at Luangwa River.

However, at that time, it was a challenge to undertake emergency works to restore vehicular traffic due to high water levels and also lack of accessibility across Kamphemba River which was also flooded.

A footbridge was constructed within 24 hours after a washaway to reinstall pedestrian connectivity and other forms of traffic such as motor bikes and ox-carts.

The water levels have now reduced significantly and the Agency has since procured steel members which were delivered on site on May 25, 2024.

The steel members will be used for the construction of an extension of the 13 metres steel girder bridge across the washed away section.

Back filling works on the Matumbo side and excavations for the abutment on the Chama side has commenced.

The materials for the construction of the abutment have also been delivered on site.

ZESCO statement on load shedding.

ZESCO Limited announces that, as of May 6, 2024, load
shedding, which commenced on March 11, will be entering its eighth week. Load shedding is a response to diminished national electricity generation capacity.

During this period, load shedding will continue daily for approximately eight hours. The
Corporation has revised the schedule in residential areas to ensure a more equitable
distribution of power outages across all customers. Some localities will maintain their existing load shedding times, while others will see adjustments.

ZESCO acknowledges that certain areas have experienced extended power outages
beyond the scheduled times. These incidents have been caused by a combination of unforeseen challenges and vandalism, along with a significant increase in demand on the national grid due to unexpectedly high consumer consumption.

Energy efficiency plays a vital role in promoting sustainability and reliability in power
systems. Customers can contribute significantly by adopting simple yet effective measures such as switching to LED lighting, using energy efficient appliances, and adopting energy-efficient ways of heating or cooking. By taking these steps, consumers not only lower their energy bills but also aid in stabilizing the national grid by reducing the peak demand pressures.

ZESCO appreciates the understanding and cooperation of its customers as it continues efforts to stabilize the power supply.

STALLED PAUL MUSHINDO UNIVERSITY PROJECT SADDENS SENIOR CHIEF NKULA

Senior Chief Nkula of Chinsali District in Muchinga Province has expressed concern about the abandoned Paul Mushindo university project.

Speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Dr. Kingsley Chanda during the Kaunda Centenary celebration at Lubwa in Chinsali, Senior Chief Nkula appealed to the Government to consider completing the University or if unwilling hand it over to the Lubwa community.

"As we commemorate the Kaunda Centenary, let us not only reflect on their lives but also strive to emulate their virtues of selflessness, love, and peace. The historical significance of Lubwa, where the first Zambian teachers were trained, including many freedom fighters and leaders must be preserved".

He expressed suddenness that projects started by the previous Government in the District that were meant to preserve our history and empower our communities such as the Paul Mushindo University have been neglected.

He said if the Government for whatever reason is not willing to complete the Paul Mushindo University project, it should be surrendered to the Lubwa Community so that they can source for an investor to complete it saying doing so, will benefit and empower the locals.

HUSBAND AXE WIFE TO DEATH.

April 28, 2024 - A 31-year-old man of Lavushimanda District in Muchinga Province has axed his wife to death for trying to divorce him.

The 27-year-old woman, identified as Idah Mutale, was axed at the back of her neck while she was having lunch with her two children aged 8 and 3. She sustained a fatal deep cut.

Police investigations indicate that the deceased had marital disputes and misunderstandings with her husband identified as Kennedy Kabwe in their one-year-old marriage. As a result, she suggested to her husband that they should dissolve the marriage.

On April 26, 2024, the couple is alleged to have had the usual marital disputes which made the wife to tell her father to return the dowry so that the marriage can be ended. Her father promised to give back the dowry today, Sunday, April 28, 2024.

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, around 13:00 hours, while she was eating nshima with her two children, her husband asked if she still maintained her decision of ending the marriage to which she responded positively.

It is alleged that Mr. Kabwe immediately got an axe and hacked his wife on the back of the neck and ran away.

The eight-year-old child quickly informed her grandfather about the incident who later alerted Police officers at Lavushmanda Police Post.

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood outside the house.

She was rushed to Mpumba Mini Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her body was deposited in the same Hospital mortuary waiting for postmortem examination.

An axe and a knife were found at the scene.

A manhunt for the suspect has been launched.

Tragic Drowning Incident Near Kasama Airport Claims Four Lives.

KASAMA, Zambia - In a heartbreaking incident on the morning of April 27, 2024, four members of the same family tragically lost their lives due to drowning at a flooded quarry near Kasama Airport. The victims have been identified as Tricia Kabangoni, Anna Chirwa, Gertrude Kabangoni, and Mapalo Chirwa.

Following a period of heavy rainfall, the quarry, normally inactive, was transformed into a deep and dangerous pond. It appears that the family, unaware of the risks posed by the recent changes in the landscape, ventured too close to the water.

Kasama Mayor Theresa Kolala alongside the Kasama Municipal Council Firefighters and officers from the Zambia Police Force, were on the ground to oversee the difficult and somber task of retrieving the bodies. Despite their efforts, the lives of the four individuals could not be saved.

This devastating incident has profoundly affected the community, as residents mourn the untimely loss of four beloved individuals. The Kasama Municipal Council extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time.

In light of this tragedy, the Council urges the public to exercise extreme caution around water bodies, especially following severe weather events which may alter their conditions and safety. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by natural alterations to the environment.

The Kasama Municipal Council with other stakeholders will actively reviewing safety measures for all similar sites in the area to prevent such tragedies in the future. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our citizens and call upon everyone to adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
