In 1973, the residents of Whittier voted in favor of purchasing the military facilities that included the entire main area of Whittier and the Begich towers, the army barracks, then called Hodge. Today, the town has 214 residents, 180 of whom live in the towers. The rest live in Whittier Manor, with 80 apartments

Clear skies, smoke is gone, first time in three days. Wind must have changed direction. Fire is still the cause of Alaskan Highway to be closed, so we have to make a 700-mile detour to get around it. Headed for Prine George, British Columbia.

The name "wapiti" , which means elk, was derived from a Shawnee and Cree word meaning "white rump" for the distinctive light fur in the rear region. The campground we are staying in is called wapiti campground. I took these pictures of these two wapiti out the front window of our RV at our campsite.
