PRIME MINISTER DELIVERS HIS STATEMENT WITH LESS SHOW OF SUPPORT

In Parliament, while the Prime Minister James Marape is delivering his statement most of his ministers and government MPs are outside.
The photo exclusively taken from Parliament clearly shows that most of the government MPs do not want to listen or be part of a government which claims to achieve something positive over the last five years.

PRESS STATEMENT //

*THE REASONS FOR A VONC*

Approved for release – The reasons for the vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister Hon James Marape is to save Papua New Guinea from ruin. That’s the gravity of the situation. The rate at which socio-economic indicators are regressing is unprecedented. The country is in an economic freefall, exacerbated by rising crime and a collapse in government institutions. What is happening now with no jobs, no fuel supply, constant power outages, no FX, and a cost-of-living crisis, where our people can’t afford rice and tinned fish, is not sustainable.
Marape is an authoritarian leader who wants to control the Prime Minister’s office and Treasury at the same time, whilst micromanaging Ministers and Secretaries, to promote his parochial interests. The country is in dire straits because of a power-hungry Prime Minister who does not know what to do to fix serious national issues like unemployment, law and order, and youth bulge. The Marape government is tyrannical and grossly incompetent.
Marape released a press statement on 28th May 2024 that the Opposition does not have the numbers to move a VONC. Was that his biggest achievement in 2024? What about a simple condolence message to the people of Enga for the devastating landslide at Maip Mulitaka? What a lack of empathy! What a confused Prime Minister on what his priorities are. The welfare of the people of Papua New Guinea should be his number one priority all the time.
MPs are still with Marape because he weaponizes the budget to hold MPs at ransom. However, the time has come for all MPs to make the call on behalf of their people and the nation and vote to remove the worst Prime Minister we have ever had.
The country deserves prosperity marked by world-class health and education, a safe place to live and work, mass employment for our youth, booming business investments, and a growing middle class. I urge the MPs in Government to make the change now, because if we don’t, the people will. The people are suffering because we have a Prime Minister fixated on holding onto power. Can the Hon James Marape stop being an embarrassment and resign like what the former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden did? Marape’s half-baked solutions and waffling responses to national issues are pathetic. The reality does not match the rhetoric! Marape has made things worse for our people because he doesn’t have what it takes to lead the country. The time has come to remove Marape in this VONC and save Papua New Guinea.

MONDAY 27th May, 2024
I RELINQUISH THE ALTERNATE PM NOMINATION

As is customary in our politics, the person with the most support receives the nomination. In this instance the man of the hour is the Hon. Renbo Paita.

I left Government because like many MPs I don't see any solutions for our challenges from this government. I left to help fight bad decisions of the government that are affecting our people every day. So this wasn't a difficult decision.

We waited for 3 months for our leaders to come and join us. The majority of our leaders don't like the direction our country is going but they lack the will to make the change. We are grateful for the courage shown by this group of leaders led by Hon Paita.

I thank the 18 members of Parliament who gave me their support in February this year. Rt Hon Sir Julius Chan, Hon O'Neil, Hon Sir Temu, Hon Kua, Hon Namah, Hon Atiyafa, Hon Arore, Hon Donald, Hon Arore, Hon Peter, Hon Sia, Hon Nomane, Hon Iduhu, Hon Basil, Hon Hewabi, Hon Morris, Hon Hagahuno and Hon Wapunai.

We have been a faithful, hard working Opposition but we have fallen short and need the help.

It was a great honor and privilege to be nominated. I am an Independent MP, this support was totally unexpected and undeserved. Thank you all so much.

To the Hon Paita and the team, the country needs a change of government, it needs a good government that cares for the people. Thank you and your team for the courage you all demonstrated by leaving the Marape government.

Our 19 remain committed to changing the Government and bringing relief to our struggling people. We will not be moved and we remain committed to this cause.

Many people will say Hon Paita is too young and inexperienced. Whether that has merit is not for me to say. I was convinced in 2019 that Marape was the right person to lead the country. I was wrong.

So I certainly have no right to judge the Hon Paita. He is a mandated leader elected by his people. I respect his mandate given by the people of Finschaeffen. I must respect the number of leaders who support him also.

With that, I want to thank all the people of PNG for your wonderful support and kind wishes to myself and the team over the past 3 months.

I know many of you will be disappointed but this is a decision based on numbers, I am only one man with 18 MPs in support. I simply don't have the confidence of enough MPs and I must by convention concede and hand over to those who have the numbers to continue your fight.

I hope you will extend that same support to the Hon Rainbo Paita as he leads us to change the government for the better.

Whatever happens, I want to assure you all that I will remain in Opposition and continue to fight bad decisions of the government until the end of my term.
