Best documentary award in the first three festivals Every Day After was screened!

28/08/2023

I am super happy to share the trailer for our new documentary short film, Every Day After. The film had its world premiere at the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival last week in Los Angeles and it won Best Documentary! We are looking forward to the next several months as we work to build upon last week's exciting festival success and to share Jary and Jessa's beautiful story with the world.
Except for Manila-based Elaine Jose Bobadilla (we missed you, Elaine!) the entire team came for the screening: director Elisa Gambino, executive producer Dave A. Liu composer Patrick Kirst, animation artist Miranda Kahn, sound mixer Alex Altman, and sound designer Woody Woodhall. Screened at the legendary TCL Chinese Theaters and supported by our dearest friends - it was a truly memorable event.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our partner Smile Train. Elisa and I are so grateful. And a special thank you to Aubrey Aiden-Buie who has worked tirelessly on the film's social media presence.
If you would like to learn more about the film check out its website, everydayafterfilm.com. Updates also here on FB, Every Day After.

Septic tanks separate solid & liquid waste into scum, sludge, and wastewater. The wastewater then moves through the septic tank and into a drain field while the scum and sludge settle in the tank. When a septic tank functions properly, the waste is not a hazard to the community but when it does not function well, it can create health and environmental risks.

CAFOs are home to Iowa’s hogs. Manure from these factory farms is overapplied to corn that is used as hog feed & ethanol. Downstream the overapplication causes elevated nitrate levels in drinking H2O sources.

Ted Corrigan, CEO of Des Moines Water Works, explains that 90% of nitrates and 80% of phosphorus in Iowa’s rivers are related to agriculture practices. Lawmakers in Iowa have identified policies for changing that situation but no laws have been passed, no funding has been issued. Meanwhile, residents are increasingly worried about the higher than average cancer rates.

Florida is America’s playground but toxic blue-green algae blooms are turning the playground into an environmental ground zero. Rising water levels & over development across the state put more than 2,000,000 septic tanks at risk of leaching f***l bacteria that feeds the algae.

When Adam Yamaguchi suggested to Mount Vernon, NY resident, Linda McNeil that her house smelled like sh*t, she took no offense. The smell of sewage throughout the city is a constant reminder to the other 68,000 residents that their homes could smell like that too. The city’s 200 miles of sewer lines were engineered for a population one-third of the size of today’s and they are on the brink of collapse.

What do you get when decades old sewers are overburdened with dense population? A $200 million repair job and raw sewage flooding homes and businesses. Cities like Mount Vernon should not be left on their own to manage the situation. NY State lawmakers must allocate federal infrastructure $ to their lower income cities, if not sewer systems will fail and the fallout will go far beyond Mt. Vernon.

Lowndes County, Alabama, home to more than 10,000 residents remains one of America’s poorest counties, so poor that thousands of residents cannot afford a costly engineered septic system that would work in Black Belt clay. This means that sewage enters homes and accumulates in yards. Swipe for some quick facts about Lowndes Country and watch WASTELAND on to learn more.
