在現世，死神朽木露琪亞突然闖進了從小就有強大靈力的少年—黑崎一護的臥室，緊接著一隻名為虛的怪物攻擊了一護的家人，一護和露琪亞一起投入了消滅虛的戰鬥中。露琪亞在戰鬥中受傷並無法行動，所以她只得把斬魄刀插進一護的身體裡，藉此把死神的靈力給一護，讓他變成一位死神。從此，擁有了「為了守護」所需力量的少年，他的生活，發生了翻天覆地的變化……
