We spoke with Yannick Even, Global Analytics Business Partner at Swiss Re, about the use of data in (re)insurance. Data has the power to transform insurance as we know it and enable insurers to offer better, more personalized products and help close the protection gap. Yannick shares how data allows insurers to cover new risks, such as type II diabetes. and enable better service to customers.

"Insurers have worked hard in the last five years to digitalize the entire value chain and processes. They have now access to much more touchpoints, digitally, and also, offline, with their customers throughout these processes. And they can collect throughout all of these touch points, where things goes wrong."

We spoke with Samdarshi Sumit, the President Director, and CEO at PFI Mega Life in Indonesia. Samdarshi shares how life insurance has changed due to the global outbreak of Covid-19 and how digital transformation has accelerated. When it comes to transformation in general, some of the biggest challenges are changing behavior, mindset, and culture.

The pandemic has forced agents to adopt new ways of selling insurance. While investment-linked products have traditionally been sold face-to-face, they are now sold virtually using video calls. The advantage compared to traditional sales channels, virtual meetings make it easier to add subject matter experts to a conversation if needed which lifts the quality of advice making sales conversations more powerful and dynamic.

Samdarshi shares his views on platforms and their importance for distribution and reaching new customer segments offering micro and bite-size insurance solutions. While micro-insurance is often targeted at low-income groups, bite-size insurance products are designed for any income group, solving a specific need.

We talked to Andy Ann, co-founder of YAS Insurtech. In the past decade, Andy has worked on digitisation with a range of different industries and understood the need of the insurance industry to change. Insurers are lagging behind when it comes to personalised products and the use of technology. With YAS Andy aims to develop a regional insurtech venture and microinsurance marketplace.

In Hong Kong, YAS is currently working with four insurers and is holding an insurance broker license. Outside of Hong Kong, the startup is offering their technology solutions, including API’s, GPS tracker and Blockchain. With these three components, YAS aims to build a micro-insurance marketplace operating similar to an app store with open APIs ready to plug and play on-demand insurance solutions. For example: YAS will use location-based technology to map out all hiking trails. If the customer decides to use the auto-on feature within the app, the insurance coverage will automatically turn ON when the user is on the trail and turn OFF when the user leaves the trail.

We spoke to Victor Roy, the Founder of Bindcover. The inspiration for BindCover was built out his own experience. Victor did the job of a broker, which he describes in simplified terms as going to see his clients face to face, understanding their coverage needs and after reaching an agreement, he then goes and does a placement. For his corporate clients, a typical quotation can not be made off-the-shelf because every situation has its own nuances and is unique. This process requires a lot of manual documentation, particularly if the risk is split amongst multiple underwriters. Victor was convinced the manual processes and the multiple pain-points could be solved with technology and make this placement process more efficient and less costly.

Victor discussed the impact of COVID-19 on the broker business and he noted that he and his team were trying to implement video meetings over a year ago and got a lot of pushback. COVID-19 has obviously changed that dramatically, with the use of Zoom and other virtual meeting tools.

We talked to Victor Roy, founder of BindCover, about how technology can make the broker business more efficient and less costly.

26/10/2020

We spoke to Ashish Kenath, the Regional Lead of Digital Ecosystems at Prudential. Ashish has 15 years of experience in the insurance industry including a posting in the US where he worked for Aetna in Hartford, CT. He received his MBA in HK and then joined Prudential.

Insurance pe*******on still remains problematic in Asia and we asked Ashish what types of things needed to change, besides the distribution mechanisms to attack this issue. Bite-size products is one thing for sure, but more importantly, overall product innovation that simplifies the policy terms and makes it easier for clients to understand the products they are buying. On top of that, it is also necessary to raise awareness of insurance products in general.

Trust and engagement also matter. As it stands now, most insurance clients feel like there is a sales process, a policy purchase and a claims process and nothing in between. Insurance companies are trying to build engagement with their clients to close that gap and also hope that that leads to higher pe*******on numbers through increased trust.
