Let's Love Chinchillas & More We're all about optimizing Chinchilla care here. We are not a rescue on our own but do operate under a local rescue.

We're fosters for the rescue, as well as the rescue's adoption and foster home coordinators. We do our best to aid the Chinchillas that are moved through they system. We are simply Chinchilla enthusists ( and other animals ) who want to share about animals and help out owners.

Louie has quickly become the most perfect addition to my office. While the others may stare and judge me, Lou Lou happily comes out of his tunnels when he hears me, and gets up on his wall hammock so he can listen to me work, talk, and his favorite? When I turn the TV on.

As you can see, he has bells on his door. He knows I'm not coming into that cage unless I ring his door bell. 🔔.

Louie is a blind chinchilla that came to us and is a sanctuary chinchilla. He was born without any eyeballs and has open sockets that need to be cleaned periodically to avoid infection and excessive crusties.

Petstores should not sell you a sick animal - they should be held responsible for treating those animals.

It's not ethical to sell them in that condition, as if general commercial sales practices were ethical to start. The bare minimum would be to sell them HEALTHY.

Speaking as a rescue, we are expected to have our animals fully vetted and medically cleared before adoption — otherwise the public would be furious and refuse to support us or adopt from us.

But then, Why the public is willing to buy sick animals from a pet store is beyond me. Even worse, when they have no idea how to treat the animals or are unable to afford the exotic vet needed to treat the animals.

Leave it to the store — most stores are required to seek medical care for their animals. AS THEY SHOULD. Don't be their bail out. Your money speaks volumes and when you're giving it to a store content to sell a sick animal, what is it saying?

Animals who are disabled or chronically ill due to ongoing health conditions that are defined, disclosed, and ethically managed is a different situation ( diabetes, missing eyes/ limbs, seizure conditions etc. Diagnosed, treated, maintained, etc. )

This is just a general reminder to everyone that volunteers for rescue groups are not paid staff, and even if we were, that doesn't give anyone the right to be verbally or otherwise abusive towards us.

Yesterday I dealt with the most entitled woman. It's not entirely uncommon either. People feel like they have a right to our time, space, and resources because we provide a service AT WILL.

This woman contacted a local breeder to surrender a chinchilla. That breeder referred her to us, which was fine.

I was transporting a car full of tanks, and a very sick bearded dragon while discussing some rescue updates on the phone with the founder of the organization when this woman called.

I took her call. As soon as I answered and said " Hello " I received an immediate " I was given this number to drop off a chinchilla I found ". I wasn't even able to introduce myself.

The woman stated she FOUND a MALE Chinchilla by the creek. I asked if she was certain if it was a chinchilla, as we have had people confuse wildlife for chinchillas, and how she knew it was a male. Most people don't know how to identify their s*x, and male chinchillas often hold their testicles inside if uncomfortable. This made her angry.

I asked if it appeared sick or injured. She said cats got it / we're with it and it was missing hair.

I told her we would take the STANDARD GREY MALE but I had somewhere to be later that evening. She would have to come around 5pm yesterday or today. She asked me to hold a surrender spot for her for THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND and I declined. 1. The animal would need a proper enclosure, food, bedding, dust, and should see a vet ASAP as missing fur could be from injuries or ringworm. 2. I explained we're also very full, with 200+ animals in rescue and 27 being chinchillas. We can't guarantee space in a week. It's first come, first served.

She asked to call me back within 30 minutes to see if she could come today, but within 10 she sent texts informing me how rude we are, and to sling names.

I have a zero tolerance policy. I'm not going to be spoken to this way and I'll be damned if a single one of my volunteers be spoken to this way.

Exciting news! 🩷

Our volunteers who handle the Chinchillas are organizing a meet, greet and adoption event so the community can meet some of the 20+ Chins waiting to find families.

This is a rare opportunity considering we can't bring the Chinchillas out to most events due to their special temperature needs.

We will be at the Turlock Pet Supply Plus on February 8th from 10am-6:30pm.

Please apply by February 1st to allow our volunteers ample time to process your applications.

Approved homes will be permitted to handle the animals to find their perfect match.

Gigi, aka bo**er, headed off to her foster home today.

She's undergoing our standard 120 day maternity hold but she's also under observation. Our vet didn't see any sign of infection when he checked out her weeping eyes, and her teeth are fine on visual inspection. She's too jumpy to have X-rays done without sedation. Since there's no tale tale signs of dental disease ( lack of eating, crumbled food, drooling, excessive weeping ) we decided on observation.

We're simplifying her care and observing for either discharge or more dental signs. If things progress we'll be back in for X-rays.

She will NOT be available for adoption anytime soon with rescue.

Here's a welcome post for Billy.

Billy joined us the same day as Teddy. He's a very zoomy beige boy who really likes to be held. He was chumming it up with his foster mama when she came to pick him up.

Our welcome post for Teddy.

Teddy joined the rescue a few days ago with another male chinchilla ( same home, separate cages ) but unfortunately he got his face nipped when the carriers/cages were too close. He's already seen Dr. B and he's here with us to be cared for.

He should be available for adoption soon, just in time for our adoption event in February 🩷

🐢 Meet miss Myrtle.

9 turtles got a freedom ride to rescue from the LA area thanks to help from . Little Hearts has been doing the leg work organizing transports for the little guys from the LA area to relieve the shelter system during this disaster.

My bathtub is FULL of scratchy, scared, turtles of dinner plate size to the palm of my hand. Hopefully they'll find new tanks and ponds to call home soon.

Two chinchillas in San Bernardino County are in need of homes. This is near the LA wildfires but they're not animals evacuated from the fires ( though I imagine the shelters need space. )

They were found ( I think ) Dec 28th and have been with the shelter since. One is male, the other is a female and noted to be spayed ( please verify, they must have spayed her to list that, otherwise I'm not sure why she would be listed as spayed and him not be neutered).

They're HOURS south of us so we're unable to help unless someone is looking to take a long drive.

How long do you think your chinchilla can survive without eating?

Unfortunately, within just 12-24 hours, a chinchilla can develop gastrointestinal (GI) stasis—a condition where the muscles that push food through the digestive system stop functioning. GI stasis often requires urgent medical intervention, including pain medication, gut motility drugs, fluid therapy, and force-feeding a liquid diet.

GI stasis can occur for many reasons: improper feeding, injury, illness, or stress. In rescue work, we’ve sadly seen this too often in chinchillas who weren’t fed properly or consistently. Injured animals, like those with broken limbs, can stop eating due to pain or stress, which worsens their condition. Dental disease is another common cause; when a chinchilla stops eating due to mouth pain, their digestive system can begin to shut down.

While feeding a recovery diet doesn’t cure injuries or illnesses, it can prevent GI stasis from turning a serious condition into a life-threatening emergency. That’s why having a recovery food like SARx by .pet.health in your first aid kit is so important—it can literally mean the difference between life and death for your pet.

We personally use SARx for our chinchillas at home and for those in the rescue. It’s a product we trust, and we don’t let run out. I’ve used it multiple times and can confidently recommend it to every chinchilla owner.

Dr. Sherwood and his team are responsive, knowledgeable, and committed to creating high-quality products. That’s why their recovery food is on our rescue’s wish list, and why we purchase it ourselves.

We were kindly gifted SARx by Dr. Sherwood today, and the kit you see came from a generous donor’s care package. The rabbit recovery kit is suitable for Chinchillas, and a great addition to your emergency kit because it comes with a feeding syringe, pre-portioned servings and Appetite Restore. A chinchilla - specific kit is coming soon.

Here's their website, check it out!

We're back from the vet.

Gigi : Her eyes don't have any signs of abrasions, and her teeth look fine in a visual inspection. Because she's so sassy, she would need anesthesia for dental X-rays so we're going to postpone and monitor her, her eating, drinking, and condition just to see if the change of care and environment improves. 🤞.

Teddy ( formally Spliff ) : Will be on antibiotics for a week. We suspected an eye infection, but last night he managed to squeeze his nose between the divider and Billy ( formally t**e ) nipped his paw and lip. So antibiotics, 2 birds one stone.

Pretty : Pretty wasn't in the office today, but her eye infection is just hanging in there. We're continuing antibiotic drops and adding oral medicine. When she's here while her foster is away on a trip, if the issue is still persistent, well do a culture.

We may bite the bullet and have her put under anesthesia for dental and head X-rays as well, because she is so fussy there is no other choice. Anesthesia comes with risks.

So this was just one trip for the rescue, and 3 animals 🩷😂

Olivia and Violet have moved to a new foster family!

They were lovingly cared for by foster mom Carol since their arrival and have now cleared their medical and maternity holds. These sweet girls are currently adoptable through rescue.

Their new foster family, Susan and Michael, are brand-new chinchilla keepers. They wanted to foster to see if chinchillas would be a good fit for them as pets. They did their homework, and we made sure to set them up for success!

By sending "adoptable" chinchillas to their home, we were able to free up space at Carol’s home for another chinchilla in need of some TLC.

We set up Susan and Michael with a gently used Critter Nation cage, bedding, food, hay, dust, wooden shelves, fleece accessories, toys, treats, and a water bottle—basically everything they needed (though we forgot a food bowl—oops!).

Donations of gently used cages, bottles, bowls, or new supplies like dust, hay, bedding, toys, and accessories from our wishlists make a huge difference. They allow us to care for rescue chinchillas and set up foster homes, which is crucial for our continued growth. ( Links in bio )

Usually, our fosters are experienced chinchilla owners, but being able to support new keepers like Susan and Michael is a game changer.

Thank you for helping us make this possible 🩷

How mornings look around here 🩷

Today we're setting up a new foster home. We're a little overbooked as we have 6 foster animals with us today.

🩷 Olivia and Violet were brought in, as they're being transferred to a foster home that's new to Chinchillas.

We have the two boys who were surrendered yesterday.

Annie and Gigi are here as well. Gigi sees the vet Monday. Annie may go to a foster home today / next weekend or Gigi will.

We'll also have Sushi and Baggins with us tomorrow.

🩷 Sushi is going to a new foster home with a past adopter.

🩷 Baggins is scheduled for ADOPTION next week 🩷

Setting up two new foster homes allows us to move 3 Chinchillas into temporary care while they're waiting to be adopted AND opened up two cages so we could accept Gigi and the two males that arrived. Fostering saves lives.

We have 27 Chinchillas in the rescue as of today with 5 ( soon to be 7 ) foster homes.

By Wednesday, my quad holding cage will be back to its usual split. I'm considering turning another lower unit into a split too.

Allow Olivia and I to demonstrate the improper way of handling a chinchilla. Olivia is just fat, and doesn't mind. 😂
