Wake County, NC -This article is a call for action aimed at achieving justice and accountability.

The truth is: There's no telling how many black people in Wake County are locked up right now at this very moment behind charges trumped up by crooked RPD cops. Troubling is the lack of outrage by black people in Wake County over the fact that in 2021, eight RPD officers were named in a dismissed la...

Conflict of Interest?

By definition, a conflict of interest arises when an individual or organization has competing interests that could compromise their impartiality or ethical conduct. This clash between personal interests and professional obligations can call an individual's credibility and reputation into question. It is important to identify and address conflicts of interest to foster transparency and integrity in professional settings. This can involve disclosing potential conflicts, recusing oneself from certain decisions or activities, or taking other measures to minimize the impact of the conflict.

Meet Lauren Freeman

Lorrin Freeman serves as the District Attorney for Wake County, North Carolina. Her husband is a police officer employed by the city of Raleigh, NC / Raleigh Police Department. Critics wonder how Freeman’s husband being a police officer is NOT a conflict of interest, when her office is responsible for prosecuting cases that involve police officers and police misconduct. There is the concern that her husband's position as a police officer creates a bias in favor of law enforcement in cases handled by Freeman.

The effectiveness and integrity of Freeman's office depends on the actions she takes and decisions she makes while carrying out her duties as District Attorney, as well as the accountability mechanisms in place to ensure that she and her office maintain high ethical standards.

Considering that the District Attorney holds a complete charging authority, let’s examine cases involving Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, patterns of conflict within the DA's office, and cases of RPD police misconduct to establish patterns and the common denominators.

For this purpose I have compiled a list. (See below)

Hello Faithful Reader, I hope this edition of The Black Birdseye View finds you well and in good spirits. In this issue, we will explore the concept of “conflict of interest” and shed light on past cases that have raised questions about the character and integrity of Wake County's District Attor...

Dear Prospective Patron:

The Wilmington Journal Breakfast Club (WJBC) in cooperation with the RS & TC Jervay Foundation will hold the 2nd Symposium in Commemoration of 1898 with the focus on “Bringing the 1898 Assessment Alive.” In 1998 the 1898 Commission rendered a report on the impact of the 1898 Massacre in Wilmington NC. Bishop William Barber, the then NC NAACP President, responded to that report with 7-Action Points that were never followed through on.

We have a new vision and a new initiative of Assessment and follow through in securing redress for the harms that were done, because of the 1898 Massacre. NC Award winning journalist, Cash Michaels, will be the moderator of our 3-hour event on Nov. 11, 2023 at Williston Middle School, which will be followed by a reception. We will have a stellar panel to address the need to ignite a progressive initiative to Revive, Renovate, and Restore individuals, as well as Historic Structures.

WJBC in cooperation with the Jervay Foundation is working with Historic Gregory Church to establish a Gregory Church/Wilmington Journal Historic District. These two icons of the civil rights era, and the challenges of the Wilmington 10 deserve to go forward as monuments in history toward a new day in the redress of the 1898 Massacre.

We’re asking you to be among our sponsors of this timely Symposium set on the 125th Commemoration of what happened in Wilmington NC in 1898. Sponsors will be listed prominently in the event program, as well as have their names scrolled on the large screen during the event. Once your check is received, you will receive an acknowledgement of your gift. Patrons can support this event at from $50 to $500. We ask patrons to submit their contributions by August 1, 2023.

Be a part of writing a better chapter in NC History. Send your check or money order to RS & TC Jervay Foundation, P.O. Box 1020, Wilmington, NC 28402, and let’s get beyond the past to a new day for all North Carolinians.

Yours truly,

Paul R. Jervay Jr.
