Yes, HATE speech, actually, is protected under the 1st Amendment.
"Congress shall make NO law .... abridging the freedom of speech,"
No limitations, no qualifiers, no quantifiers. All speech is actually protected, just like ALL press is protected, again, no limitations, no qualifiers, no quantifiers.

We have been huge supporters of RSF for years. We believe that the preservation of the Republic (The US is a Republic not a Democracy) is best helped when the 1st Amendment is 100% supported and practiced. We do NOT believe in ANY government interference in the Freedoms protected in the 1st Amendment!
The fact that RSF now wants such action imposed on the US shows that it does NOT support FREE and INDEPENDENT journalism, but wants only the journalism that it deems "correct". Remind you of any men named Lenin, Stalin, Tito, Castro, Kim, or Mao.
