In the Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, a sequence of Pennsylvanian System sedimentary rock ~586 m thick tells a story of environmental change—from shallow marine deposits to marine carbonate rocks to mixed siliciclastic-carbonate strata, with plant and animal fossils throughout. Plant remains reveal a shift from mostly wetland taxa to mixed floras with xeromorphic elements, including conifers.
