The National, The War on Drugs, and Lucius Bring the Zen Diagram Tour to Montreal

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Zen Diagram tour brought co-headliners The War on Drugs and The National to Place Bell in Laval for an unforgettable evening. Over the course of the night, the two indie rock powerhouses delivered sets that spanned their extensive catalogs.

Lucius opened the evening with their signature harmonies. Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, dressed in matching outfits and captivated the audience with their synchronized vocals, which felt almost magical. In their six-song set, they performed hits like "Tempest" and "Nothing Ordinary." After a moving rendition of "Dusty Trails," The War on Drugs Adam Granduciel joined them on stage for a powerful performance of "Old Tape." Lucius then closed their set with "Genevieve."

The War on Drugs followed, delivering a ten-song set that dove deep into their career. They opened with "An Ocean in Between the Waves" and balanced their setlist between tracks from their 2021 release and classics from their 2014 album. The crowd was treated to hits like “Harmonia’s Dream,” “Burning,” and “Red Eyes.” For their second-to-last song, Lucius rejoined them on stage for a stunning rendition of "I Don’t Live Here Anymore," and they wrapped up their set with the fan-favorite "Occasional Rain."

By the time The National took the stage, the crowd was primed for their 20-song set. Rather than focus solely on their recent releases, the band dug deep into their catalog, touching on almost every album in their 20-year career. Frontman Matt Berninger’s baritone voice resonated through the venue with songs like “Sea of Love,” “Space Invader,” “Tropic Morning News,” and other fan favorites. Berninger ventured into the crowd several times, drawing fans into the performance with an almost intimate connection. The intricate guitar work of the Dessner twins, paired with Bryan Devendorf’s impeccable drumming, anchored the emotional intensity of the performance. The band concluded their set with "Fake Empire," followed by a three-song encore, ending the night on a high note with "About Today."

It was a memorable night of indie rock for the fans, with each band delivering moments that will last long after the final notes. It was a night to cherish for those lucky enough to have seen them.

Sunday night, Ottawa’s Bronson Centre Music Theatre played host to a night of rising local hip hop acts, headlined by an energetic and unforgettable performance by Memphis-born rapper, NLE Choppa. Known for his hits “Shotta Flow” and “Camelot,” Choppa has burst onto the scene and quickly risen to fame with his energetic delivery and unbridled charisma. At just 21 years old, the platinum-certified Choppa (Bryson LaShun Potts) is claiming his place in the new wave of young hip hop artists, and this most recent performance was just another example of his rising stardom.

The night kicked off with a series of performances by local artists, both from Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Area, including acts like Siege, Dante Augustus, Apollo Rae, Bond and GG Chevy, among others. Each act brought their unique style and sound, hyping up the crowd and showcasing the city’s growing hip-hop scene. With each act, the anticipation for NLE Choppa continued to grow, with eager fans chanting for NLE at every opportunity.

When the intro for “Narrow Road” finally dropped, the atmosphere shifted dramatically as the crowd was sent into a frenzy. Choppa stormed onto the stage with his signature dynamic flow and wildly charismatic stage presence. His ability to captivate the audience was undeniable, with the crowd matching his energy every step of the way and singing along to every word.

Just when it seemed like the energy had reached new heights, Choppa announced he brought a special guest: Polo G. The crowd erupted as the Chicago rapper joined him on stage, further electrifying the atmosphere. Together, NLE Choppa and Polo G performed several hit songs, showcasing their undeniable chemistry and taking the night to another level. The unexpected collaboration was a highlight of the night, leaving attendees thrilled and wanting more.

Overall, the concert blended local talent and superstar appeal, as NLE Choppa delivered a performance that solidified his place as an exciting, emerging artist in hip-hop. Canadian fans still have a chance to catch NLE Choppa as he continues his tour with a couple more shows in Alberta. Polo G is also set to launch his Hood Poet Tour in October.

Unfortunately, the night took a turn as the show came to an end, when a shooting outside the venue required attendees to go into lockdown within the Bronson Centre until police cleared the area. An unfortunate end to what was previously a fun night of hip-hop.
