Old Glory Magazine Old Glory is Britain's best selling steam and vintage preservation magazine, encompassing steam power

If you love the spectacle of immaculately-restored old machinery, or are fascinated by Britain’s rich industrial and transport heritage, Old Glory is the magazine for you! In vivid detail it brings back all the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Glorious showman’s engines belt out the amperes to drive historic fairground rides; pairs of mighty steam ploughing engines turn the soil; steam rollers mak

e up roads once more; tram wheel flanges squeal through town and city streets; colourful working narrowboats ply the canals; dray horses deliver good ale to the pubs; vintage tractors cough into life; stationary engines turn over tirelessly and the commercial vehicles we used to know take to the road again.

This is the highly impressive frontage for the Dodgems. Just look at the superb artwork on the top boards and the pillars. It’s exciting, it’s exhilarating, it’s stupendous, but what does ‘No Zebras here’ mean? We think it means that there’s no stopping for Zebra crossings! Mrs Mary Benson was in charge of this ride and her powerful voice and cry of “One more car, one more rider” gave rise to the title of an album by rock guitarist Eric Clapton.

This Scammell is turned out in a special, fully lined out, ‘Heavy Recovery’ livery. In the rare event of a breakdown on the road, more often for tyre blow-outs, this is the go-to lorry for roadside rescue missions. The jib on the body would also come in useful for erecting the larger rides.

A message from the Editor 🗣

Great Dorset Steam Fair

Hi Everybody,

Following my Old Glory editorial in November 2023 when I stated that the GDSF 2022 road structure and the World War One trenches have all been filled in, Martin Oliver GDSF MD, has just told me that is not correct whatsoever. I actually drove down the main road, looked over the fence on my way to Somerton on Friday 23 June, and genuinely thought that was the case, but, I clearly didn’t have my glasses on and Martin assures me the structures are all still there and intact.

Martin and his team are working tirelessly to make the 2024 event possible but are not yet in a position to let us know the full situation. I apologise for muddling matters here. We can only hope for some positive news soon on the greatest event of its kind in the world. We want to see it carry on.

This Atkinson Borderer Mk.2 is powered by the popular Gardner 180 engine, and has a custom-built body for the original Supreme Waltzer. The body features a semi curtain-side design and has extra under-chassis storage. The wagon sports dual headlights and chromed wheel-nut guards. Alongside is one of the latest purchases, an ERF, for the newer semi-trailer mounted rides.

Atkinson Borderer AWV 797B was purchased in the early 1970s, replacing an earlier Atkinson. Its prime function was to carry the heavy floor plates for the Dodgems. Of note is the belly box between the front and rear wheels used for extra storage, the chrome front bumper and the twin air horns.
