The Knights are proud to announce that Zodiac Suite, our collaborative album with critically acclaimed pianist and composer Aaron Diehl, has been nominated for a Recording Academy / GRAMMYs award in the "Best Classical Compendium" category. This album brings to life composer Mary Lou Williams' orchestral vision for her suite and has been praised by the New York Times as "capable of dishing out American art music ambrosia." Congratulations to our friends and fellow nominees!

Sammy Davis Jr, at the age of three, would perform shortly after the opening in his career debut! Today marks the birthday of the late great saxophone master Jimmy Heath! A leading light out of Philadelphia's BeBop scene, Heath would rapidly establish his bona fides in jazz, first as an altoist before finally landing on the tenor saxophone. At the dawn of the 1960s, Heath would ultimately cement his reputation as not only one of the tenor's leading lights, but also as one of jazz's iconic composers and arrangers. A dedicated bandleader, educator, and mentor, Heath enjoyed a career that spanned nearly eight decades, leaving behind one of the most extraordinary legacies in jazz.

Announcing WRTI’s new monthly podcast: The Late Set.

Jazz is a conversation — and that’s what The Late Set is all about. Join broadcaster Greg Bryant and critic Nate Chinen each month for perceptive variations on a theme, and their related interview with a special guest. Just like a hang at the end of the gig, in the back of the club, it’s direct, unfiltered and illuminating, revealing the music and its culture in a deeper light.

We’ve just dropped our first TWO episodes at the same time. Episode one is all about "the Philly sound” featuring Orrin Evans. Episode two focuses on “jazz competitions” with Joshua Redman. Listen wherever you get your podcasts or via this link: https://www.wrti.org/podcast/late-set

I can't begin to measure the impact Ahmad had on me. He was a master of playing without cliche, and every standard became a new song with his orchestration, arrangement, timing and touch.
Thank you, Ahmad for all the gifts you gave us. 💔
