scientists claim they're close to achieving a groundbreaking feat: propelling submarines with lasers almost as fast as jet engines.

The technology, developed at Harbin Engineering University, involves generating plasma underwater with lasers to create a "detonation wave" for propulsion. Previous attempts failed due to directional challenges, but now, researchers believe they've solved the puzzle.

Coating submarines with thin optical fibers emitting laser power could produce up to 70,000 newtons of thrust, potentially enabling speeds faster than sound. This advancement, amid concerns of a submarine arms race, raises questions about the weaponization of laser propulsion technology.
