CRIME Pine Bluff High School football player killed in shooting
PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Due to the weather, Pine Bluff High School has been closed for the week. A week that members of the football team needed to lean on each other.
A 16-year-old Pine Bluff High School student was the victim in the city’s first homicide of the new year.
On Friday, Jan. 12, sophomore Kendall Burton was shot and found dead at the intersection of South Georgia and East 25th Avenue.
Pine Bluff PD said Burton was killed at around 8:30 p.m. There is currently no suspect information.
Burton played football for the Zebras and head football coach Michael Williams said he was the type of student that always did the right thing. When Williams got word of Burton’s death, he couldn’t believe it.
“I paused and I couldn’t catch my breath for a second,” Williams said. Coach Williams said Burton was a beast on the football field and the team “loved being around him.”
But not just a great player, Williams said he was a natural-born leader as well.
“Even when stuff was going bad on the field, they looked at Kendall,” he said.
Williams said Burton was dedicated to his future dream of going to college to play football.
At just 16 years old, Kendall had overcome an obstacle that many don’t, beating cancer back in 2016.
“To beat cancer and be cancer-free was already a major success within itself,” Williams said. “He was a major fighter.”
With Burton being Williams’ 2nd player to pass away during his coaching career, the fight to put the guns down remains in his playbook.
“We just need to make sure that we pray and hold our kids tight and find a solution to all this gun violence,” he said. Kendall will be laid to rest at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at New Community Church in Pine Bluff.

A Phoenix father is facing second degree murder charges for allegedly killing a man who allegedly harassed his young daughter.
Police say Melvin Harris, 40, admitted to beating Leon Armstrong, 26, to death after he attempted to break into the teenage girl's stall at a QuikTrip convenience store bathroom.
Harris was waiting for his daughter and her two friends in the store’s parking lot when Armstrong approached his car asking for money. Harris gave him change, then Armstrong walked into the convenience store, police said
Soon after, Harris' daughter and her friends came out of the store and said the man had harassed them, according to a police report.
Harris then went to the store and demanded that a security guard take action — or else he’d take matters into his own hands, police said.
Upon leaving the store, witnesses reported seeing Harris approach Armstrong, whom he then punched in the face, police said. Armstrong fell to the ground and Harris proceeded to stomp, kick and punch him until he was unconscious before driving off, police said.
After the assault, Armstrong was taken to a hospital with injuries including brain swelling and a a broken nose officials said. Harris initially faced aggravated assault charges, but they were upped to second degree murder after Armstrong died.
“It is a horrible tragedy and QT will continue to assist law enforcement with their investigation," said Mike Thornbrugh, spokesman for QuikTrip.
Harris is expected back in court later this week.

SHREVEPORT, La. (BLMRADIO ) - No parent wants to receive a call about their child being dead, but that’s the call Laverne Taylor and Terrance Terry received Sunday night, and they’ll never forget it.
On April 23, Joseph Dewayne Taylor, 33, was pulled over for a traffic stop, but he never made it to his destination because he was shot and killed by Shreveport police that night.
“He was a good father to both of his kids; he doesn’t miss anything. He loves to play Spades. He’s just a person that everybody loves. Right now our family is hurting because he’s gone. This is beyond ridiculous. This is a stopping point right here; this is for my son,” Laverne said.
Joseph’s family says they received a call then obtained graphic cell cellphone footage of the incident that they watched in disbelief. The family says they feel his life was stolen.
“I want this coverage to go out all over the world, United States, to every person you know. You’ll never know when it’s gonna be your last time. You never know when a police officer is going to stop you and do unnecessary things,” Laverne said.
Protest held outside SPD after deadly officer-involved shooting; mayor releases statement
Through their pain, Joseph’s family demands answers.
“But for my son, me and his father, we want justice. That’s all we really want. For the officers involved in killing my son, I want justice. They need to be arrested today and charged with murder. That’s what I want.”

Chance The Rapper’s Viral Carnival Dancing Opens Convo On Vacation Behavior Of Married Men Given those facts, it would be perfectly understandable for GRAMMY-winning emcee Chance The Rapper to let loose while visiting Jamaica earlier this week for the 2023 Carnival festivities wrapping up in Kingston today. However, his “dirty dancing” with a local woman that’s not his wife ended up opening up the floor for many on social media to criticize his actions being that he’s seemingly a happily married man.Take a look for yourselves at Chance getting caught in 4K below:
