Dear Readers,
When I lived in the Avenues of Salt Lake City, a hillside neighborhood of older homes, I saw many fine Victorian houses that had been cut into two, three, or four residences. I also saw a few that had been restored to a single residence. And student housing in Provo, Utah, often involved cutting up and revising old houses.

When I was five years old, we lived in a divided old house on Canyon Road. We had the upper story, while a lovely old lady lived on the main floor. I remember the weird feeling when I pressed through the coats into the back of a closet and discovered that the floor dropped away. My father explained that the closet was closing off what used to be the back stairs — the servants’ passage from floor to floor. That old house still bore the evidence of its history.

One recent morning, I woke up imagining that our current house was being turned into apartments. It wouldn’t be too hard, I thought — we already had a second kitchen in the bonus room, and 2.5 ground-floor bathrooms. Is that what will eventually happen to this house? And the sound of construction had never been absent long — remodeling this and that to fit our changing needs was simply part of life.

When I was in my late teens, I helped my father build walls to divide our basement into two bedrooms and a much-reduced family room. I learned how to lay out a stud wall on the floor, then raise it up and nail it into place. While my dad was no contractor, he had been a sign painter and had built or rebuilt many large outdoor signs. He had the skills, and made sure I, too, knew how to handle manual and power saws, and how to drive a straight nail.

So this idea of a house being cut up into separate residences put the idea in my head: What if a teenager woke up to hear the noise of construction downstairs, only to discover that his contractor father was building a wall dividing the left half of the house from the right. It was a harsh blow — it meant that the ugly quarrel between his parents was being made permanent.

That was the beginning of the story. But the real strength of the story came from who would move in to occupy the other half of the house. Only then did I step into the storyline that would lead me to make this a Micropowers Novel, set in the same world as my novel 𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑. For me, though, it all grew out of the world of cut-up old houses, and working alongside my father in building walls that divided up an old familiar space.
