Behind the mic, there’s magic happening at KMIH. 🪄 Join us for our new series featuring the incredible shows of our Intro, Advanced, and ABRO students. Our first feature? Girl Talk, hosted by the talented trio of Alisha, Sarah, and Katie. These Sophomore sensations have been captivating audiences on KMIH and Spotify since their freshman year. 🎧

We asked the three hosts a few questions to get to know them better:

Q: What inspired you to make your show?
A: We were inspired to make Girl Talk because we love to share our opinions and thoughts on current events. We thought it would be fun to have a podcast that shares what it’s like to be a teenage girl, and how current world events affect us. 

Q: What is your favorite part of running your show?
A: Our favorite part of running Girl Talk is the friends we make along the way, as collaborating together to co-host the show brought us together and gave us a tight bond. It also allows us to be creative and take a break from other school work, which can be very helpful during stressful times.

Congrats to all KMIH members who earned a John Drury award! The John Drury High School Radio Awards were created to recognize excellence in high school radio broadcasting. The awards are named in honor of award-winning ABC-Chicago news anchor, John Drury, and are hosted by North Central College and WONC 89.1FM in Naperville, IL. Every year radio students from all around the world enter to win, so winning one of these awards is very impressive! Congrats KMIH students & staff!

The 2024 NPR Student Podcast Challenge Honorable Mention awards were announced on October 24th and MIHS/KMIH Broadcast Media student, Mia Tamarikin was named as a winner. Tamarkin’s work was chosen from nearly 2000 entries. Her podcast, titled Flipping the ‘For You Page’: TikTok’s Ownership Rethinked , explored the proposal to ban Tik Tok in the United States and included an interview with US Congressman Adam Smith. MIHS Broadcast Media instructor, Natalie Woods says Tamarkin’s accomplishment with this story goes beyond the award. “Mia showed so much determination throughout the process. She did the research necessary to cover this story, made sure it was the best it could be by getting insight from a lawmaker and pushed herself to sharpen her interview and storytelling skills to produce this award-winning podcast.”
KMIH 889 The Bridge is Mercer Island High School’s award winning radio station. KMIH is focused on elevating and broadcasting student voice and Tamarkin’s award is an example of how audio storytelling can be used to explore a national issue affecting teenagers in our community.
