The Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society soulfully stirs the heart in this collection of spirituals and hymns composed by Dr Shalati Joseph Khosa. This recording brings to life diverse music compositions giving a true understanding and a profound appreciation of Christian feelings and commitment to religious beliefs. The late Dr SJ Khosa was a friend of the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society. His sense of rhy
thm and syncopation was beyond any other modern composer we know of. He was able to capture the rhythmic patterns of the Tsonga people giving insight into the their musical culture, tradition and customs. Featured tracks include Xikhongelo Xa Hosi (The Lord’s Prayer), Yehovha I Murisi Wa Mina (The Lord is My Shepherd) and I Yesu N’wana Wa Xikwembu (It’s Jesus the Son of God). The songs of SJ Khosa have traditionally been performed a ca****la. A chamber orchestra which accompanies the choir on this recording adds a new dimension to these works. The orchestrations by Mark Cheyne infuse a western texture into the musical magic of Dr SJ Khosa. This heavenly combination is yours to savour and derive divine inspiration. George Gobingca Mxadana is the founder and music director of the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society with which he is synonymous. He has earned enormous respect from the choral fraternity for his achievements with the choir, at one time winning all regional and four national Eisteddfods by a record-breaking margin. Most significantly, he and the Imilonji Choral Society are considered to have led the way in the indigenisation of choir competition performance, in both song and dress. The album has been nominated for a 2017 SAMA (South African Music Award: ) in the category Best Classical and/or Instrumental Album.
