About 5 years ago, a dear friend named Sarah asked me if I was writing for anyone, I said not currently. She then asked if I wanted to start something with her. I have always been drawn to creatives and Sarah Spohn is a creative. She is also one of the most driven people I have met during my 42 years on this planet. I knew this was going to be the start of something special. Our original ideas for this labor of love were a little different than what it has evolved to, but we both realized we loved the more personal storytelling aspect of journalism. Last year, was one of the most difficult years of my life, not only did I deal with a bad case of COVID, but I also dealt with the lingering effects of long COVID. I had to put things on the back burner to get healthy and The Palm Reader was unfortunately one of those things. I am proud to say that I have recovered almost fully and I am slowly getting back into writing. The first piece I have been writing is a cathartic column detailing my COVID-19 experience. This month, however, I am signaling my return to The Palm Reader and writing people's stories in our community. It's time to get back to showing people that . Most of all I want to thank Sarah for her patience and understanding over the years and for considering me as a person to be involved in an endeavor that has become such an important part of my life.

Hi guys, I have seen some new followers in the past couple of weeks and feel it is my obligation to fill people in on why there hasn't been any new activity on this page and the blog. I have decided to take a mental health hiatus from PR. Back in March, I caught COVID, and unfortunately, I am still feeling the effects of the virus 6 months later as a Long Hauler. Brain fog and fatigue have made it extremely difficult to do minimal tasks let alone write a whole story. I miss writing. I miss connecting with people. I miss the interview process. I miss the feeling I get when someone says thanks for telling my story. I have however seen an uptick in community news stories by local news outlets and that puts a smile on my face. I can't wait for the day when I can wake up and routine things and passions become a daily part of my life again. I am just not there yet.

As always, Lansing Ain't Lame!

Once upon a time, a man had the vision to create a day celebrating all things Lansing Michigan. He chose the day May 17th to represent Lansing's area code. Thus, 517 Day was born. Thank You Melik Brown for creating this special day celebrating the Capital City.

For a lot of people, this last year has been the toughest thing many of us have had to endure. Luckily, for many, The Fledge had their backs. Whether it was through the food or clothing pantry, producing masks, or launching entrepreneurial competitions to grow businesses in a time when many are shutting down for good; The Fledge was there. Doors open. Their continued efforts constantly show, day after day, just what a community can do.

The thing is, it's not just luck though. It's strategic moves, focused support, identifying problems and providing radical solutions that makes The Fledge such a terrific network. Here's where you can help The Fledge increase opportunity, equity, prosperity and justice for all.

Tomorrow from 10 a.m. onward, The Fledge is hosting a 13-hour marathon fundraiser with a goal of raising $104.000. Donations can be made online.

GOOD NEWS :)

This past winter, our writer Jeremy Kohn wrote a story about Lithic Creation, a family jewelry-making business. Over the last year, they've been hard at work handcrafting over 250 wire-wrapped Amethyst pendants to donate & deliver to COVID and I.C.U. nurses and doctors at Sparrow and McLaren Hospitals.

Since the Amethyst is thought to be a 'protective stone,' the stone pendants were delivered to the healthcare workers on the frontlines, those who were putting themselves in harm's way to save other's lives.

We think the "Precious Stones for Precious People" project" is just that -- PRECIOUS. Glad to see it!

Three years ago, Alexa Hecksel started moving towards a low-waste lifestyle. Contemplating her life’s legacy after losing her father to pancreatic cancer, Hecksel began thinking about how her actions and habits would impact future generations. Small swaps from bottles to shampoo bars and bringing her own bag to the grocery store springboarded a lifestyle, and then, a business plan.

In October 2020, Hecksel started Clean Refillery, a low-waste refillable store, in her mother’s basement. Just yesterday, the business announced they’re opening up a brick and mortar in REO Town on Saturday, April 10.

“We get these well-established poets from California and the Detroit area, and they are blown away with what they see at The Poetry Room,” Dylan Rogers, owner of The Robin Theatre, said. “I think Lansing has a bit of a self-esteem problem. I don’t think we think we are as good as we are.”

Time to buckle up Lansing, this is gonna be GOOD. "Sky's the Limit," is a free virtual event brought to you by The Poetry Room and All of the Above Hip Hop taking place Tuesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by The Robin Theatre and Arts Council of Greater Lansing, this creative streamed show combines hip hop and poetry.

We enjoyed talking with Masaki Takahashi of The Poetry Room , Ozay Moore of All of the Above Hip Hop Academy, and Dylan Andrew MacNaughton Rogers of The Robin Theatre for this story.
