Dear Comrades,
To ring in the new year, some important news from HM.
Firstly, a very big announcement: from the first issue this year (32.1), we will be increasing the number of pages in the journal every year by 50%, from 1,000 to 1,500pp! This will allow us to publish more great articles (and, we hope, more quickly) as well as special issues, symposia and so on. Unfortunately, there will be an increase in the individual subscriber price to 120 euros, but we have successfully lobbied for a 35% discount, which brings the cost down to 80 euros (Individuals are eligible for a 35% discount on subscriptions with action code 71697. Orders should be sent to [email protected], mentioning the code.)
As you may already know, HM is an operation that relies almost entirely on militant labour from the editors, alongside the comrades Louis Hartnoll and Danny Hayward, who coordinate the journal and book series respectively, and the copy editors, who we insist on still employing to produce the best quality texts possible. But we have no office, we receive no subvention from a university that would allow us to be partly funded and our only stable revenues are the subscriptions and the royalties from the HM Book Series (a fortiori, now that organising the London Conference is so much more expensive to organise).
And yet, despite this, we still produce a high-quality quarterly journal, a book series with more than 300 titles in it, a podcast, online events, and a massive annual conference!
Obviously, this “economic model” is not sustainable in the long term, and we are discussing ways we can try to generate some extra revenue (all Marxist benefactors’ donations would be very much appreciated!) but, in the meantime, we really need your support:
1. Please subscribe to the journal and get your comrades, colleagues, and friends to do the same. We know that some of you may have had bad experiences in the past and the previous distributor went bankrupt which did not help matters... But we are assured now that things will operate much more smoothly, and any problems can be reported to us, and we can get them sorted immediately, so please forgive them for past crimes and take the plunge (and inform us if you haven’t received your renewal notices)!
2. Please lobby your university or other institution to subscribe to the journal – this is really important!
3. Please circulate news about new issues and articles as widely and uninhibitedly as you can;
4. Please buy the books in the Book Series and, again, lobby your librarians to buy or subscribe to the series as a whole (see links at the bottom);
5. Please donate to and publicise our crowdfunding campaigns:
