The Cumberland County High School Cheer Team competed in the 2024 National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, FL, from February 9-12. The team made it to the semifinals and will bring home a ribbon to add to their collection. For most of the team, which consists of 19 underclassmen, this was their first time competing on a national stage. This experience will allow them to grow more skills and become stronger for future competitions. For our seniors, they will take with them fond memories and leadership skills that they can apply to their future vocations.

Team members who competed include seniors Madalyn Bowman, Analiese Filler, Trinity Grace, and E. Kaylee Norris; junior Gabriella Daugherty; sophomores Kylee Applegate, Whitley Atkinson, Elliana Filler, Abigail Lowe, Josee Morales-Burke, Hannah Poore, Amanda Robinson, Mckenzie Stevens, Alliyah Stover, Jazmine Tibbs, Briley Tollett, Aubrey Vickers, and Macey Warner; and freshmen Madison Daniels, Mikayla Gagnon, K. Bailey Norris, Marlee Jo Poindexter, and Adelyn Speich.

INFORMATION REGARDING FUNERAL PROCESSION FOR DEPUTY GREG MCCOWAN

MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE - On Wednesday, February 14, Blount County Sheriff's Deputy Greg McCowan will be laid to rest. The funeral is scheduled for 1 pm at Sevier Heights Baptist Church, 3140 Maloney Road, Knoxville. Following the funeral, which we anticipate will end between 2:30 and 3 pm, there will be a funeral procession from Sevier Heights Baptist Church to Grandview Cemetery at 2304 Tuckaleechee Pike in Maryville. The procession will take Alcoa Highway southbound to Hall Road in Blount County, and then to Tuckaleechee Pike in Maryville and end at Grandview Cemetery. As you may expect, the funeral processional will be quite long. Please anticipate delays on Alcoa Highway and the remaining route to the cemetery. Please look at the map below to see the exact route.

If you choose to pay your respects to Deputy McCowan and his family by standing along the procession route, please choose a safe area away from traffic.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM CST TUESDAY...Total snow accumulations of up to one inch, mainly north of Interstate 40. There is a lot of uncertainty about snow amounts. If cold air moves in quickly, snow totals could increase above 2 inches for some spots north of I-40. Either way, any travel impacts are expected to be limited to elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

Elana Sawyers, age 12, was last seen on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at approximately 8:20 p.m. in east Morristown.

Elana has medium-length, light brown hair and blue eyes. She is 5’6" tall, weighs 200 lbs. and has a scar on her left eyebrow.

Featured speaker will be Donna King. Donna spent 35 years in public education in Hardin County Schools in West Tennessee as a teacher, principal, and supervisor. In 2012, she was named a finalist for Supervisor of the Year for the Tennessee Department of Education. She moved to Crossville to become Executive Director of Kids on The Rise, a mentoring program that matches adult volunteers with children and youth who may be experiencing opportunity gaps. She now volunteers as a certified trainer for Building Strong Brains Tennessee and is a board member for Cumberland County Trauma Informed Community Alliance. She has a Master’s in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s in Leadership and Supervision, and Professional Certification in Trauma and Resilience from Florida State University.
